SHIRLEY-RICHMOND NOTES.
Dangerous Corner. In order to test the new traffic dome which has been erected at the corner of North Parade and North Avon road, a number of members of the Richmond Burgesses' Association witnessed a demonstration of rounding the dome at night by a motorist, as complaints had been received that motorists did not observe the rule of the road and round the dome, due to it failing to provide sufficient room on one side. The test proved th*i it was impossible for a motor-car to round the dome with safety travelling any faster than from 10 to 12 miles an hour, owing to the narrow sweep on one side. It was decided to write to the City Council asking that the Chief Traffic Inspector visit the corner some evening for a conference with members of the Burgesses' Association. The opinion has been expressed that this corner is one of the worst in Christchurch for traffic. The present dome had been erected at the request of the Association a few months ago, but it is considered it has not been placed in a satisfactory position, the chief trouble being due to the position of the tram lines, which take a wide curve at the corner. It was also held that the lighting was inadequate at the approaches to the corner. Stanmore Road. The Richmond Burgesses' Association has forwarded a request to the City Council that the widening of Stanmore road be completed. At present five properties on the west side, from Alexandra street to North Avon road, hold up the work. It was considered by members of the Association that there would be little difficulty in the Council making suitable terms with the property owners and completing the widening of the road, which has been carried out on the west side from the Stanmore road bridge to Alexandra street, and from there portions have widened to North Avon road, leaving it, according to a member of the Association, "like a dog's hind leg." The Council workmen are at present widening the east side. It has been contended that the widening of Stanmore road requires urgent completion, as it is fast becoming the main traffic road to the north, and will carry a heavy amount of traffic when Marshland road is fully eon- J creted.
