AUSTRALIAN TEAM. WIN AGAINST WAIRARAPA. (PRESS ASSOCIATION TELEGRAM.) CARTERTON, July 36. The opening match of the tour of the Australian representative hockey team was played at Carterton Show Ground this afternoon. The weather was cold and dull and the attendance poor. In the first spell Wairarapa had the better of the game, the slow, sticky ground hampering the Australians, but in the second half the visitors gave a much improved display, having evidently got the pace of the ground. Australia won the loss and after a minnte'3 play rushed the ball down to the \Tairarapa circle, where H. Cormie shot a good goal. Wairarapa, playing with' better combination, kept the ball in Australian territory, but the visitors made isolated rushe3, during one of which Ncttleton scored from a scramble in the goal-mouth. The Wairarapa backs were too slow in getting back to Sefend. Australia 2, Wairarapa 0. Wairarapa kept up their attack, and a good centre by Whitburn to Itiggfl, who passed to Brocks, enabled the last-named to. register the first goal for AVairarapa. Australian forward rushes earned the ball to the Wairarapa circle, and Ryan saved a hot shot. C. Bannin took the ball from halfway and centred hard, and after several passes Gnodin obtained possession and shot a splendid goal. Australian 2, Wairarapa 2. Wairarapa continued to press, and after give and take play, Goodin came with a rush and sent in a beautiful point stroke, which the Australian goalie stopped m good style. Whitburn was playing a splendid game and put his side on attack repeatedly. The epeli ended with the scores two all. Very shortly after the beginning of the second spell, Fitzpatrick scored for Australia. Wairarapa seemed to be taken unawares after a penalty had been, given against them. A dangerous Australian move was well stopped by Fo«t«r. A sharp run down the field was made by S. Smith, who centred high into the circle. The Australian goalie was peppered with three hot shotß, which he keot out, hut Wairarapa was not to be denied, and Goodin found the net. Australia 3, WaiTarapa 3. The Australians now took charge of the game and had Wairarapa continuously in trouble. The slow return of Wairarana's backs left the way open for Fitztmtriek to score. Australia continued to attack and Wanless shot a ?ood eoal. A further rnsh by the visitors gave H Cormie an opportunity. Australia 6, Wairaroa 3. Plav was now verv much in favour of Australia, and from a scramble Xeitleton scored the final goal of the 9-ame, which ended shortly afterwards with the scores: Australia 7. AVairarapa 3. The feature of the game was the stick work hv the Australian forwards. W. Xettleton, H. Cormie, and Tj. were the' outst Minsr players for th» visitors, for Wnirarana, Whitbu"-n. C. and AV. ■Rinnii. Goodin, Bicrge, and Smith did excellent work.
