TRANSPACIFIC MAILS.

AN AUCKLAND COMPLAINT. [THE PRESS Special Service.] AUCKLAND, July 18. A complaint that mail from America was being taken to Sydney and then transhipped to the inter-Colonial steamers for delivery in Auckland was made by Mr A. Boucher at a meeting of the Auckland Chamber of Commerce Council. Mr Boucher said that the Niagara reached Auckland from Vancouver last Monday, but the Marama arrived from Sydney on the following day with Canadian mail. It appeared that the Canadian and United! States postal authorities were not waiting for the tramsPacific mail steamers and that New Zealand mail wap being sent to Australia through their desire to keep their offices clear of mail. Mr Carter, manager of the Auckland branch of the Union Steam Ship Company, said he could not understand the position. It was possible that mail was going to Australia, as he believed that the American post offices were in the habit of clearing out waiting mail by the first available boat. It was decided to make enquiries into the question.
