SEFTON. At a meeting of the Library Committee, Mr P. J. Thorn© presided. The librarian reported that during the past four weeks there had been 287 issues of books. Thirteen new books had been placed on the shelves and twelve more were authorised for purchase. A meeting of the Kowai Athletic Sports Club was held at the residence of Mr H. Ford, but owing to the inclement weather there was only a fair attendance. A motion of condolence was passed with Mr Harvey on the death of his mother. The balance-sheet of the sports dance showed a credit of £l3 10s 6d, which, together with the effort made at the sports, brought the total to £43 odd. It was decided to tender a farewell social to Mr and Mrs E. C. Topp on August Ist, OXFORD. The weather continues wet and wintry. Very heavy rain fell en Wednesday night, the amount registered for the 24 hours ending 9 a.m. yesterday being 1.90 inches, while the amount for the four days is 4.12 inches. The capacity of drains and ditches has been mora than taxed and there has been much flooding. Colds and influenza are very prevalent in the district, and in consequence the school has been closed for a week. When Mr James Budge was topping trees he fell a distance of about 20 feet nnd broke a wrist. FERNSIDE. The Fcrnside Cricket Club held a social in the A. and P. Hall, Rangiora. Mr W. Smith presided. During the evening Mr H. Bennett, president of the North Canterbury Cricket Association, presented the junior cup to Mr E. Bailey, captain of tne winning team, and in doing so congratulated the club on its achievement. Toasts honoured were:—"The King"; "North Canterbury Cricket Association," Mr E. Matthews, responded to by Mr H. Bennett; "Fernside Cricket Club,'' Mr T. S. Hanna, responded to by Mr R. Matthews; "Kindred Associations,'' Mr W. V. Guy, responded to by Mr H. Kinley; "Founder of the Femside Cricket Club," Mr H. Bennett, responded to by Mr E. Bailey; "The Secretary, North Canterbury Cricket Association," Mr G. A. Milne, responded to by Mr T. S. Hanna; "The Ladies," Mr G. A. Milne, responded to by Mr E. Bailey. Items were given by Messrs W. Smith, A. Hunnibel!, and Bell.

SOUTH MALVERN.

Heavy rain continues to fall throughout the district, and all outdoor work has been brought to a standstill. The rainfall to date this month is 4.15 inches, of which 3.58 inches has fallen since Sunday night. For the twentyfour hours ending 9 a.m. Tuesday, the precipitation amounted to 53 points, Wednesday 118 points, and Thursday 169 points. Football and hockey matches, which had been arranged between Glentunnel and Hororata Schools for Wednesday afternoon, were postponed. The attendance at the Glentunnel School has been well maintained in spite of the inclemency of the weather. The attendance on Tuesday was 91 per cent, of the possible, and on Wednesday 96 per cent. The following team has been selected to represent Glentunnel against Sheffield B to-morrow: —L. Willis, Jorster, Bisphan, Mitchell, J. Stewart, F. Smith, Simpson, Powell. J. Harrison, Blair, L. DARFIELD. The Rev. Mr Jones presided over t meeting of the Darfield branch of th« W.C.T.U. Miss McLay gave an ad dress on the life of the late Mr T. E Taylor. It was decided to form t Band of Hope and the following offi cers were elected: —President, Mr A G. Holland; secretary, Mrs Heyder treasurer, Mrs Hutcheon; committee Mrs W. Glanville and Miss R-. Ander son. The first meeting of the Darfiek Band of Hope was held in the Public School. Mr Holland was in the chaii and introduced the Rev. Mr Featherston, of Greendale, who gave an address on the effects of alcohol on the system. The children provided a verj enjoyable programme. Mr T. Pole is visiting Mr and Mrs W. Pole. Mr and Mrs R. Kent hav< returned from a holiday in the south. BURNHAM. The fortnightly meeting of the Wesley Guild took the form of an entertainment by the young people of the Guild, assisted by some friends. Songs were given by Mr Geo. Campbell, Elvie Rcwe, and the school children; recitations by Elva Haslett, Betty Francis Jack Robson, and Frank Shepherd; ar item by Doreen Popple, Keith Parker, Howard Parker, Vincent Tween and Ronald Hooper; pianoforte solos by Miss Tweed and Keith Parker; a vocal duet by Miss Shepherd and Mi Erridge, and instrumental items bj Miss Shepherd and Messrs Erridge and Myers. Games and competitions and a dainty supper brought a most enjoyable evening to a close.
