THEFT OF £414.
CLERK PLEADS GUILTY. (PIWB9 iSSOCIATTOX TZLBCmaM.) WELLINGTON. July 10. Thomas George Gillespie, aged 49, a clerk, was charged to-day that, between July, 1y23, and May, 1927, he fraudulently failed to account for sums totalling £414 to the Lands Department. An inspector of the Audit Department gave evidence as to discovering irregularities, and said that it was by reason of accused's forgeries that they Were not- discovered earlier. To counsel witness said that there had been no audit of these particular books for four years until 1928. There were now some changes in the system of booking being made. The changes, however, were beine made prior to the discovery. The alterations to receipts were very clumsily done, and it would be evident on a verv casual inspection. Gillespie pleaded guilty, and waa committed for sentence.
