The names, which were not necessarily in order of proficiency, were as follows:—Messrs It. J. G. Coliins, E. A. Empson, W. B. Fuller, S. Hollander, and E. E. Lnttrell. The Hurunui Sub-Union wrote stating that the following resolution had been carried:— ••The executive of the Hurunui Sub-Union is dissatisfied with the action of the Canterbury Union in cancelling the proposed tour of the country Sub-Union's representative team, and requests that the matter be reconsidered." "I might mention that the decision of your Union came as a bit of a shock," slated the writer, "as our players were keenly interested in the idea of' a country te3m going on tour." [ Mr McPhail said the tour had not been ' abandoned as it had never definitely been arranged. Mr S. r. 'Wilson (president) said all of the Sub-Unions would hold a conference on the day of the Southbridge Shield match at Leestou next Saturday. Mr Wilson said it would be a good idoa for the selectors or somebody representing them to see the match. " * Mr McPhail said the country team might have gone south or to the Coast. It was decided to send a tub-committee out to attend the match. Messrs Wilson, McPhail, and J. K. Moloney were appointed. The secretary of the Rotherham Llub wrote recommending the inclusion of his team in the Hurunui Sub-Union. Mr McPhail said it was a case for the Sub-Union, and the letter should be forwarded to it. The Otago Union wrote acknowledging receipt of the Union's letter confirming August 10th as the date for the Payne Trophy match, and thanking Canterbury for agreeing to this date, as it would not have been at all suitable to Otago to have played this match any earlier. It might be August 3rd before Otago could find the winner of its competition. The Union also acknowledged receipt of the Canterbury Union's letter confirming September 14th as the date, for the junior representative match to be played as a curtain-raiser to the Otago v. Canterbury ma*ch at Christchurch. Mr Britten said it did not appear that the competition would be finished in less than four playing Saturdays, unless something unforeseen happened. The Otago Union should be advised that it would not be possible to play the Payne Trophy match on August 10th. Mr McPhail said the date arranged was only subject to Canterbury finding the "winner of its competition also. I* should be pointed out to Otago that the date might j have to b«> reconsidered. Mr W. Britten: We can't ppssibly meet | them on the date mentioned. i It was decided to make no reply to Otago for a fortnight, so that the position would be a little clearer. The secretary of St. Bede's College Club wrote applying for permission for its first fifteen tn travel to Timaru to play the Timaru Bnvs' I7ieh School on Jnly 11th, with the writer, Father J. W. " The Kaiapoi Club complained that its under 17 team journeyed to ChriEtcburch to play itß match with West Old Boys. Both teams turned up in full strength, but no referee arrived. The club paid all the expenses of its team, over £7 having been paid out iu travelling expenses already this season. The club claimed a refund on this account of £1 16s lOd. Members said the match had been played at a scratch game, and it was decided to | recognipe it as a competition contest. Mr Moloney asked that the 'Varsity team, in view of the heavy casualties on Saturday, be civen the bve. on Saturday. Mr McPhail: That was a good team they finished up with. What are you vrorried aboi't? Mr Britten said it had been impossible to comply with the request. The secretary stated that the proprietor of one of the cycle stands near Lancaster Park had given the whole of his takings on Saturday for Charity Pay. and two others had made contributions. ELLESMERE SUB-UNION. The E]le3mere Rugby Football Sub-Union met at Leeston on Monday evening, when delegates were present from all affiliated clubs except United. The president, Mr 11. T. McMillan, conducted the meeting. Mr VV. V. Chatterlon, referee oi the KoUeaton v. Dunsandel second grade match, oa June 15 th, reported having ordered M. Daly, a Kolleston player, ofi tbe field for striking another player. The letter had been brought beiore the executive, which had decided that the player should be suspended until the full meeting oi the Sub-Union, wben tbe case would be dealt with. The Rolleston delegates denied an allegation that Daly had played in a match the following Saturday, stating that he bad attended the match only as & spectator. Daly appeared before the Sub-Union and explained that bis action was an ordinary defence. Another man rushed him as he was picking up the ball, and he bad simply put out his hand. Mr W. S. McLaughlin said that the player had evidently not struck a hard blow, and moved that he should be permitted to play after next Saturday, making a total of four weeks' suspension in all. Mr T. G. Harper seconded and the motion was carried. Nearly two hours were engaged in hearing explanations and evidence concerning alleged abusive conduct on the part of a spectator at the. Southbridge-Waihora match at Waihora on Junu 6th. The line umpire, Mr F. Miller, had complained of the "insulting remarks" used by a spectator whom be named as Hopley, and the Sub-Union, at its last meeting, decided to warn the man that in the event of a recurrence be .would be barred from ail foot'ja'l grounds under tbe Sub-Union's control. Mr William Hopley, o; Lincoln Hotel, wrote in reply to the letter that he was not the man in question, as he had not spok'.-n to the line umpire during the match. ] Mr Hopley appeared before the meeting and described his movements on the ground. He maintained that he had not spoken to Mr Milier the whole day, nor had Mr Miller spoken to him. There had been a good deal of bickering at tbe match. Mr Miller was called, and repeated the charge made in his original letter To the best of his knowledge, Mr Hopley was the offender, but when he had seen him on a subsequent Sunday, Mr Hopley had disclaimed that he was the man. Mr Miller called two witnesses, Maca.-tney and Paul, to substantiate hi 3 statements. Mr Hopley called four witnesses, W. E. Cox, K. Xeale, D. Mclntyre, and another, who stated that he was one of the quietest men among the spectators. Mr Miller was recalled and asked whether Mr Hopley could have been mistaken for some other spectator. He admitted it was possib'e that there may have been a mistake. The meeting expressed the unanimous opinion that a mistake in identity bad been made by Mr Miller, and that Mr Hopley was not the spectator who had caused the trouble. Mr Miller said he was willing to accept this decision, and regretted that the matter bad arisen. Mr Hopley accented his apology. Tbe president gave notice of intention to move that the resolution imposing the caution on Mr Hopley should be rescinded. He moved that a letter should be sent to Mr Hopley expressing regret for the contents of the previous letter, and informing him that the warning was to be withdrawn Mr Miller seconded, and the motion was carried. The president further moved that tbe SubUnion should write to Mr Miller thanking him for the attitude he had adopted. Mr Bruce seconded, and this was carried. Minutes were received of the annual conference of Sub-Unions, which the Canterbury Rugby Union had adopted, with the exception of the recommendation that a country team should be sent on tour. "The* Hurunui Sub-Union forwarded a copy of a letter it bad sent to the three other Sub-Unions in Canterbury, expressing dissatisfaction with the Canterbury Rugby Union's opposition to the travelling team, and asking them to send delegates to Southbridge next Saturday for a conference after the shield match. The president said that the Canterbury Rugby Union had not turned down the travelling team, but had only decided that it could not support it financially. The president wa3 appointed to represent Elleamere at the conference. The Sub-Union decided that it could not guarantee any financial assistance at present. In order that the College Club might complete its matches before the vacation commenced, it wns agreed that the College and Rolleston second grade teams should play their match before the date Pet down, pror viderl they were able to make satisfactory arrangements amone themselves. Mr Calder asked that a similar arrangement should b* permitt»d for the first grade match against Irwel!. The request was granted on condition that next Saturday was not chosen for the match Mr Beamslev conveyed a recommendation from the Southbrid'e Club to fix a Saturday upon which all clubs would be requested to take collections for the earthquake relief fund. It was decided that the collections should be taken next Saturday. Permission wae granted for a trial hockey match to precede the Southbridge shield match against Hurunui next Saturday The following representative team was selected 'o meet Humrmi, with Mr H.
