CLOCK TOWER.

NEW GEARING, HANDS AND DIALS. The Electricity Committee reported to the City Council last evening:— A letter lias been received from the National Electrical Company, explaining that the telecliron clock installation in the Clock Tower has proved unsuitable for operating the existing mechanism and hands. The quote or £69 10b they originally submitted was not based on a full knowledge of all the circumstances. The company now undertakes to complete the installation with new telechron gearing, new hands, and plate glass dials on each face for an additional £l7O. Otherwise they ask to be relieved of their contract. The committee is of the opinion that no alternative offers as satisfactory a solution at a comparable price, and recommends that the offer be accepted, but that if there is any likelihood of the Clock Tower being moved, the work should be postponed until after the Tower has been re-erected in its aew position. Cr. E. R.. McCombs said that the committee felt it would be a mistake to undertake the work if the Clock Tower were to be removed, as appeared likely in view of the erection of the new Majestic TTieatre. At present the clock was a nuisance to the City. It was decided to refer the matter to the Works Committee. Cr. M. E. Lyons said that the corner was only second in importance to the Bank of New Zealand corner, and the time had arrived when the Tower should be put back to the street line or removed to an open space like Latimer sniinre. Tho Mayor: That can be looked into.
