COUNTY COUNCILS
TAWERA. At the monthly meeting; of the Tawera County Council there were present—Crs. H. A. Millar (chairman), J. K. McAlpine, W. M. Williams, R. M. Johnson, W. K. McAlpine, D. Doody, and R. Hilliken. The Department of Agriculture wrote acknowledging the Council's representations regarding the continuance of the Government subsidy on the destruction of the kea. It was decided to pipe the crossing on the Russell's Flat road near Mr Jones's, and to erect a motor bridge over the creek on the Swamp road. Application was made for the erection of a bridge over the draiu at the entrance to the Town Hall, Kowai Bush, and it was agreed to. Cr. W. K. McAlpine W3S reappointed as the Council's representative on the District Highways Council. It was decided to make an inspection of the county with a view to enforcing the clearance of gorse and broom from the road frontages. MOUNT HERBERT. The monthly meeting of tho Mt. Herbert County Council was held on Friday, in the Council Chambers, Purau. Present: Messrs E. W. Gray (chairman), A. K. H. Gardiner, H. H. Gardiner, Chae. Pope, Keg. Qebbie, and J. W. Guy. An apology was received from Mr J. A. Gellety. The chairman moved that the Council forward a letter to the Mayor of Westport, expressing the Council's sympathy with him and the surrounding districts in the late disastrous calamity. It was resolved to forward the sum. of £lO 10s to the relief fund. Mr A. R. H. Gardiner gave notice of motion to strike a general rate for both ridings at the next meeting. It was decided not to take over the new road at Waitahuna until additional metal was spread thereon. It waa ajjreed to make*un application to the Highways Board for a secondary road from Port Levy to Teddington. The annual balance-sheet was returned from the Auditor-General and certified correct. The Council decided to have it printed and forwarded to all ratepayers. It was decided to lop all the trees surrounding the office and obtain a quotation for painting the office and buildings. The* Chief Surveyor, Department of Lands and Survey, wrote stating that when the reconstruction of a rood takes place, the old survey marks must not be destroyed. Mr Stewart Peters wrote drawing attention to the flooding at the bridge at Teddington, and suggested that the bridge should be widened. . , The chairman undertook to inspect the spot and report at the next meeting.
