THE "GLORIOUS FOURTH."

HEAVY LOSS OF LIFE IN AMERICA. (umrsD press association —by klectbic TELEGRAPH —COPYRIGHT.) NEW YORK, July 5. A nation-wide survey at present shows that approximately 159 people lost their lives celebrating the Fourth of July, but contrary to other years, fireworks were responsible for almost a negligible number of deaths, the majority being due to motoring and bathing. Deaths through automobile accidents totalled 70. It is estimated that at least 400 people were injured. The death toll, however, represents a substantial decrease over 1928, when nearlv 200 lives were lost. At Grand Havn, Michigan, 10 bathers were drowned on Thursday in Lake Michigan. They were swept from the shore by the heavy undertow before the eyes of hundreds of spectators, who were unable to render assistance. —Australian Press Association, United Service.
