VIOLENT STORM IN EUROPE.
ROOFS AND CHIMNEYS DEMOLISHED. HEAVY DAMAGE IN AUSTRIA. (tTHITSD PRESB ASSOCIATION—BY ELECTRIC TELEGRAPH—COPYRIGHT 1 (Received July 7th, 5.5 p.m.) LONDON, July 6. At least 20 persons perished in a violent storm of lightning, haii, and rain which swept South Germany and Austria, causing immense crop and other damage. The Berlin correspondent of '•The Times" says that they were mostly killed by lightning, falling trees, and the capsizing of lake and river craft. A man with a horse and cart was blown into the Danube,, near Straubing, and was drowned. Hailstones as big as fists severely damaged crops and cut the faces and hands of people who were running for shelter. They also smashed 75 window panes on the Berlin-Munich train. Thirty-five passengers were treated for wounds caused bv splinters of glass.
Roofs and chimnevs in Vienna and in nearly every town in Austria were demolished, and telephones and telegraph services were reduced to chaos. Thousands of trees were uprooted and the soires of several churches collapsed. The Vienna Fire Bricade was called out to nrop up the roofs and wall 1? of no fewer than 120 houses.—"The Times" Cables.
