RUGBY LEAGUE.

ADDINGTON WIN CUP. BRILLIANT PLAY BY BACKS. The turf at Monica Park was in splendid condition on Saturday for the final match for the MeKeon Cup, with a keen easterly wind blowing down the ground. Addington's backs enabled them to beat Hornby by 8 points to 2. The attendance wag again very good, though it did not teem so big as at sous earlier matches. Aldington have been playing very good football this season, and thoroughly deserve tboir win. Last time the? gained the cup was in 1923, Marist and Hornby having thared possession aince then. Jn earlier fiitnres this season both Addington and Hornby hare played waiting games, i.e., apparently taking things easily in the first spell, and waiting for opponent's to tire themselves, and then setting off after the points, but these taetirs have not a! way a been successful. In this game, however, both teams were in top goar all the way, and strove their mightiest right from the kick-off. Consequently the i'octbal! was very good, at times superlative, and at no stage did it sink to a slog among the- forwards. From the first scrum the Addisgton backs set out in a passing rush, all handling cleanly, and then right on through the game they fanned out on C7«ry opportanity, thus giving the Hornby forwards no chance (o keep play tight. This fast back play also helped to tire the big Black forwards, as changing direction by the Afagpic3* three-quarter lino often had them dashing across the field and back again. The back play was distinctly in Addington's favour all through. Hornby's baeks, on the other hand, did not try anything fancy; they jnst played the hard, orthodox game, and too often crowded the wing men. They had two very different wingers, and generally played to the weak man, while Maekie, a strong runner and always a likely trygetter, did not get his chances. In the forwards honours were fairly even. Hornby's heavier pack did not get more than half the scrums, and though they won in the tight work there was not enough of it to have any great bearing on tie result. Magpies had rather the better of the loose play, even though they did not work as hard as their opponentE. The teams were ai follows: Hornby— V. Warr; W. Paris, P. Smith, R. Wackie; K. Wilkie. J. Howison; C. Woods; H. A. Vivian, A. Ward. W. Woodgate, W. Vivian, JJ. Vivian, 8. Minards. Addington: B. O'Connell; J. Henderson, W. J. Stewart, J. Stapley; J. Sanders, « T . Amos; A. Peddie; L. Brownie, A. Green, P. Flanagan, 0. Sturroek, W. Hayne, M. McLeod. Of the full-backs, O'Connell was better than his visa-vis. He was a little smarter in getting to the ball, and had better judgment in his kicking. Both are small men, and very clever, and they frequently earned rounds of applause for goad work. Of the three-quarters, Stapley was the best. He is now putting a dash into his work that was formerly lacking. Stuart went lii 3 best game this season, and looked once again like the Stuart of former years, who gained New Zealand honours. It was surely an irony that he, an eld Hornby player, should hive registered both tries against his old team. Mackie was starved, and did not have a chance to show his form. Smith showed up most of the Black men, but held on far too long. Of the inside backs, where Addington won the game, Sanders stood out. He was miles ahead of all the others, and took the leader's part in almost every attack, while if an extra man was needed on defence he was always there. Not for years has anyone stood out in a club game as did Sanders on Saturday. Amos was also a tower of strength; not once did he let an opponent cut past him in the line. Peddie, at half, played better than ever before. He received a terrible battering from the big forwards, bnt that made him more determined than ever to stop them. The Blacks' inside men were overshadowed, but all went very well. They were the best on their side, albeit Woods is still feeling the effects of his long illness, and is thus well below his brilliant best. The honours in the forwards go to Green for his hooking. It had a lot to do with hia side's win.- jltayne was the best of the Magpies in the loose work. Por Hornby, N. Vivian was the best, with Woodgote and H. A. Vivian always in the thick of everything going. Soon after the start Sanders ; intercepted and sped goalwards, sending on to McLeod, who was stopped »m the line. Wilkie clearing smartly. Davis knocked himself out by running into Amos, but returned to play to miss a long penalty. Inside halfway Stapley shot, and looked set for s. try, but a great jump by Warr , just touched one ankle, and brought him down. It was a smart save. O'Connell missed an ambitious penalty, and then Amos cut in beautifully, and went across to send Stuart on for a try in the corner, which O'Connell could not improve. O'Connell fielded neatly at halfway, shaped for a pot at goal, then decided not to, and went up. and gave to Stapley. to Stuart, who wriggled past defenders to score under the ports, after a great thirtyvard run. O'Connell eroaled. Addineton had the better of the first spell. Things were- more even in the second. The Addington backs always held the upper hand. but with a good lead decided not to taV» so meny risks, nut rather to msi<- sure of the defence. The only rcere in this ppe'.l was s goal by Smith.
