TWO GREAT PICTURES.

CIVIC THEATRE NEXT WEEK. In offering patrons "The Battle of tie Sexes" and "Steamboat Bill Jun." on one programme the management of the Civic Theatre has certainly provided a sumptuous bill of fare for next week. D. W. Griffith is a producer whose name has become a housetold word because of pictures directed by him in the past. Such films as "The Birth of a Nation," "Intolerance," "Way Down Bast," "Broken Blossoms," etc., hare stamped D. W. Griffith as one of tte most famous of all directors. His latest production, "The Battle of the Sexes." is a story that finds a counterpart, unfortunately, in every community. Jean Hersholt, as the devoted yet wayward husband and father, is an actor whose work stamps him among the world's best. Phyllis Haver, as the Vamp, and Belle Bennett as the wife and mother, give portrayals that will long be remembered. Don Alvarado as the man about town and Sally O'Neil as the daughter are excellent. Few pictures seen in Christchurch have had such a capable cast. Supporting "The Battle of the Sexes" is Buster Keaton's latest comedy, "Steamboat Bill Jnn." Buster Keaton and Ernest Torrence are thoroughly at home in this, their best comedy to date. A novelty as a musical interlude has been arranged by llr Gladstone Hill. The De Luxe Orchestra will occupy the stage with appropriate setting and play the overture "Raymond." In addition the Be Luxe Duo, Miss Anne Stephenson and Mr Harold Prescott. will appear in song and duet. These artists have delighted Civic audiences during the present week, and next week Miss Stephenson will sing "Sailing the Sea of Romance," while Mr Prescott will contribute "Awake." In response to numerous requests the Duo will give the duet, "A Night in Venice." Fresh from her triumphs in "Trail of '9B" and "Earaona," Dolores del Rio scorea perhaps aa even sweater success in "Revenge," an excellent production which will be screened for the tast time at the Civle Theatre this evening. The programme is supported by "My Lady of Victories." a beautiful film in coloured photography, baaart on the life of the Empress Josephine and Bonaparte. There are also a number «f excellent support*
