A Wellington paper says that some of the Canterbury touring farmers are going back to the North Island to inquire into land prices and farming conditions generally. They are not at all convinced that they could do better than farmers in the North, bat they have kept their eyes open, and have come to the conclusion that the northern man has an easier time without the heavv team work that is necessarv in the South. A member of the party suggested that when the «xt large parties (from Otago and South lnno) went north shortly, maps large enough to be of use to them, w.th lome practical information as to the quality and location of land, should be provided. He says the fanners would welcome this, even if the maps were *old at something slightly over cost. Ther tried to buv maps, and even timetables, at railwav stations, but in some eases were not able to purchase even the latter. Birmingham hae undertaken a £2,000,000 drainage scheme to prevent flooding by the riven Sea and Tame.
