The Department of Agriculture has received the following cablegram, dated May 17th from the High Commissioner for New Zealand, London: — Tallow. Quiet demand at auction at easier rates. Present quotations for spot are:—Mutton, fine 42s to 42s 6d per «wt, fair to good 39s 6d to 41s, dark to dull 36s 6d to 375; beef, sweet and/or mixed 40s 6d to 435, fair to good 37s 6d to 40s 6d, dark to dull 36s to 375, mixed fair to good 37s 6d to 40s, d3rk to dull 36s to 36s 6d; gut, etc., 35s' to 375. Fruit. Stocks of New Zealand on the market are almost cleared. Prices are about the same as last quotations. The Mataroa, Hermirius, Middlesex, and Coptic are due during the next few days. Hemp. ,

Manila waa barely steady during this week, but closed with a hardening tendency. Value for the May-July shipment, J grade, is £37. . t Sisal. —The market is steady, but very little business is doing. June-August shipment is quoted: No. 1 £37, No. 2 .£35 10s. Mexican.—The shortage for the year is expected to be 60,000 bales, and it is rumoured that prices will be adavneed in July. Present values are: —Special brush £4l, and good white £37. New Zealand.—A little better demand at low prices, which sellers will not meet. Other grades are dull and unchanged at last week's rates. , Wool. Sales closed on Wednesday. Competition generally was good, but prices for nearly all descriptions were below March closing quotations. The tone was rather weak throughout. Merino has been irregular and withdrawals frequent, and prices declined 5 to 71 per cent., and for fine crossbred 71 per cent. Medium crossbred met keen French competition, and closed at par to 5 per cent, cheaper. Coarse crossbred and all classes of scoured crossbred Bold at par New Zealand merino scoured met a good demand, any change being in favour of sellers. Clothing slipe was par, and other sortß 5 per cent, lower. Average closing values per pound were: 60's to 64's super Is 9d to Is lid, average Is 4d to Is 6d 56's to 58's (super halfbred) Is 8d to Is lOd, 50*s to 56's Is 6d to Is 7d, 48 s to 50s' Is 5d to Is 6d, 44's to 46's ls J* d to Is sd, 36's to 40's Is 3d to Is 4d. The number of bales catalogued for the series was 114 000 of which 92,000 were sold, the Continent taking 52,000, and the Home trade 40,000. The next series commences on July 9th.

AUCKLAND POWER BOARD'S LOAN. £275,000 RAISED. £THB PRESS Special Service.] AUCKLAND, May 90. The Auckland Electric Power Board has beeii successful in raising a substantial portion of the loan of £675,000 authorised by the ratepayers in February for extensions to the electrical undertaking, and for further strengthening the system to meet delivery of hydro-electric power from Arapuni. In his annual report, the chairman, Mr W. J. Holdsworth. states that £28,000 has already been obtained by the sale of debentures over the counter at 5i per cent., and negotiations for a loan of £350,000 have now been completed with *he Australian Mutual Provident Society. The first installment, namely, £50,000, will be available within the next few days, and further amounts will be drawn quarterly as required. The rate of interest is 5$ per cent, and the money is obtainable at par, interest _ commencing from the date of each drawing.

The ninth annual report of Lewis Eady, Ltd., presented at the annual meeting of shareholders, stated that the net profit for the year ended March 81st, after making provision for bad and doubtful debts, depreciation, and taxes, was £2194 12s 9d, compared with £1032 12s 7d in the previous veer. The amount brought forward from the previous year, £12,008 18s, was available for appropriation. This it was decided to dispose of as follows: Payment of dividend of 8 per cent, as last year on ordinary capital of £24,530, absorbing £1962 Bs, leaving a balance of £10,046 to be carried forward ANTHONY HORDERN AND SONS. DIVIDEND OF 8 PER CENT. In their third annual report, the directors of Anthony Hordern and Sons, Limited, Sydney, state that a profit of £270,403 was earned during the year ended February 27th last, as compared with £267,713 for the preceding 1" months. After paying debenture interest of £70,000 there is, with £lOll brought forward £201,415 available. From this sum the directors have written off the balance of formation expenses, amounting to £2O 597; dividend of 7J per cent on preference shares accounts for £56,250 and 8 per cent, on cS shares £IOO 000; a sum of £20,000 is transferred to reserve, making it £6o,ff», and £4567 is carried forward.
