KWANGSI ATTACK ON CANTON. WARSHIPS STANDING BY. (UHITED PRESS ASSOCUTTO*—BT SUKT&IC TELEGRAPH —COFTBIGHT.) (Received May 21st, 12.42 a.m.) HONG-KONG, May 20. The Kwangsi offensive against Canton has been renewed with marked energy, this morning's report indicating that the city is likely to fall shortly. The main body of the Kwangsi troops are making towards the arsenal on the outskirts of Canton, heavy gunfire being clearly heard in the city, which is under martial law. H.M.S. Moth and H.M.S. Cicala are standing by at Wuchow for the purpose of evacuating foreigners. An American warship is there for the same purpose. It is believed that many Canton Chinese are eager to see the Kwangsi win. —United Service. TROOPS MOBILISING. PENG THROWS DOWN THE GAUNTLET. SHANGHAI, May 19. Marshal Feng Yu-hsiang, so-called "Christian general" and Moscow's agent, is reported to have finally thrown down the gauntlet to General Chiang Kai-shek (Nationalist dictator) by the issue of a circular telegram principally attacking Chiang's methods of self-afegrandisement and simultaneously declaring that he is not quarrelling with the Nanking Government. i Feng and Chiang are respectively rapidly mobilising the Kuominchun and Kuomintang troops, and an outbreak of hostilities is expected in the Lyang district, a stronghold of the former powerful General Wu Pei-fu and a strategic position in Central China.
Feng's declaration was unexpected in official quarters. Nanking's apprehension is proved by the fact that the postponement of the State burial of Dr. Sun Yat-sen on June Ist is under discussion. Latest reports from Lyang are that the Kuominchun troops are destroying bridges and railways in order to impede the Government forces.—Australian Pres3 Association.
