THE SQUARE.

WHAT IS INTENDED. PLAIN ENGLISH FOR THE MAYOR. The intentions of the Save the Square Committee, under the injunction granted by the Supreme Court, were made plain, in a statement made on Saturday by Mr George Gould, the chairman of the committee. "The Mayor's remarks of Friday," Mr Gould said, "might be mistaken for the babb ings of an infant. As a fact, they are the carefully thought-out statements of an astute man spoken with the intention of agitating public opinion and creating a smoke screen. "One might suppose that he is unaware that the Council stand 3 convicted of a breach of trust. The methods of 'Suaviter in modo' being apparently wasted on his Wor h*ip, it may be as well to translate the Committee's statement of Thursday into plain English, which uav be done by saying that if the City Council does not shortly take steps to cease its abuse of a trusteeship, the order of the Supreme Court will be enforced. "The onus is on the Council to minimise the public inconvenience arising from the correction of its own malfeasance. "The Council is entitled, as the Mavor savs, to manage the affairs of the'Citv, but it, like ot er people, must act within the law. I trust I have now made myself intelligible." The Issue Cleared, The Mayor (Mr J. K. Archer) was asked on Saturday evening if he wished to reply to Mr Gould's statement. Mr Archer said he did not desire to reply. The City Council would consider the matter. He was glad that Mr Gould had replied, as he had done, as he had made* the issue clear.
