MOUNT PLEASANT.

ADDRESS TO ELECTORS, Mr A. G. W. Williams, who is seeking election as the Mt. Pleasant representative of the Heathcote County Council, addressed a fair number of ratepayers in the Mt. Pleasant tennis pavilion on Saturday evening. Mr W. de Thier was in the chair. Mr Williams explained at the outset that he was entirely . opposed to the methods of administration of the present representative, Mr B, Eiley, although personally he bore him no grudge whatsoever. _ . Concerning the . roading in the Mt. Pleasant Biding, he considered that the hill road should be declared a secondary highway, for then a 3 to 1 subsidy would be forthcoming. He said that the sewerage had been put in by the Mt. Pleasant syndicate, and actually Mr Riley elaimed the credit for this. He was not in favour of taking it over until there was some likelihood of it becoming self-supporting. Mr Eiley stated, he continued, that the syndicate had not many sections left when the sewerage was mooted, but the point was that whoever purchased sections sinee then had paid the additional price of the sewer. He considered that Mr Riley had made a further blunder in connexion with their water supplyWithout reference to the ratepayers it was purchased from the syndicate for £2500 and had not proved a bargain. Furthernore, when new pipes were being sunk, Mr Eiley allowed one 6-inch pipe to be put in instead of three 3-inch pipes. With regard to electricity he would support any extensions, provided they would pay. He would also encourage the cutting up of .the hill, which, except for a eertain district, the present member had not done. He would not invite councillors from other ridings to decide on any policy concerning the Mt. Pleasant district, which was being done at the present time. Mr Williams then referred to several letters which had appeared in one of the newspapers concerning Mt. Pleasant affairs. He said that Mr F. H. Gale had circulated a petition among the residents when the question of the type of the new school was being decided upon, and had subsequently not been man enough to present it. Mr Gale: My reason for that was that without any authority from the ratepayers you" made a statement to the ratepayers about the type of school decided upon. Mr Williams: I made no such statement. ~ Mr Gale: You admitted it yourseif not so very long ago. You conveyed an absolute lie to them. A further breeze occurred when Mr S. H. Thomas asked Mr W. B. Webb to withdraw certain remarks of his concerning the rounding off of one of the corners on the main road in which Mr Thomns was nlleged to have interested himself. Mr Thomas said that he had nothing to do with it. and a further explanation by Mr Webb apparently cleared the matter up. At the conclusion of his address Mr Williams answered several questions and Was accorded a hearty vote of thanks.
