TEMUKA.

PERSONAL. Sergeant S. G. Hall, of the District Office, Police Department, Dunedin, accompanied by Mrs Hall, is on a holiday visit to Temuka. Bowling. At a meeting of the committee of the Bowling Club Mr A. H. Abbott presided. The matter of selecting the pairs and rinka to represent the club in the South Canterbury championship was left to the Selection Committee. The Centre wrote stating that a South Canterbury rink was being formed to be included in the Canterbury team to play Otago at Christehurch. It desired that the names of two players be forwarded for consideration. It was agreed to forward the names of Messrs T. Edwards and C. L. Fraser. The sum of &2 was voted to the Domain Board. The Centre wrote intimating that Temuka had won the Thursday section of the champion rinks, but no finality had been reached in the Saturday section. It was agreed to write reminding the Centre of its decision last year to play .the final on the Thursday afternoon each alternate year. Life-Saving Instruction- i That the recent swimming carnival has borne fruit is evidenced by the interest now being taken in the art. There were several demonstrations of life-saving at the carnival, and as a result the teachers of the Temuka District High School have commenced instructing the pupils both in land drill and practical life-saving. The instruction is given by Miss Gregg and Mr P. Campbell. WAIMATE. At its monthly meeting the Waimate Ladies' Benevolent Society granted five requests for assistance. Mrs A. V. Richards, of Waihao Downs, was elected a member. Mesdames Manchester and Adams were appointed visitors for the month. Mrs Wyvern Price, of "Braemar," Waihao Downs, is visiting Dunedin. Mrs J. C. Templer has returned from Christehurch. Miss S. Carter, who has been visiting Miss G. Rodgers, Fairlie, I has returned to Waimate. Miss Helen I Bartram, of Tologa Bay, who kas been [ visiting Mrs T. E. Parry, Union Bank of Australia, has left for Christehurch. Mr and Mrs P. T. "Wallace have re- ! turned to Waimate after a visit to j Christehurch. j The Waimate Amateur Swimming Club intend holding a carnival at the local baths on February 28th, and a splendid programme is being arranged. ' Sir Harry Lauder, who passed ! through Studholme Junction on Tuesday on his way south, told a Waimate ! I friend that he hoped to spend a few I days in Waimate on his return from the south. . The members of the Woodbury j Ladies' Miniature Rifle Club gave a farewell party in honour of Mrs H. R, Marks, who has been secretary of the club for the past four years, and who is leaving the district shortly. A happy time was spent, and before leaving the club captain, Mrs Baker, spoke in appreciation of Mrs Marks's services to the elub, and called upon Mrs Harris, the senior member, to present a beautiful bowl to Mrs Marks with the best wishes of all present. Mrs Marks suitably responded. At the monthly meeting of the Woodbury Domain Board there were present. Messrs W. Tait (acting-chairman), T. P. Wooding, J. Fifield, and H. Cooling. The secretary reported that the Domain and cemetery paths had been mown, and the paths around the hall tidied. A satisfactory report was received from the caretaker of the hall. Cocksfoot rights were let to B. Rae, and the tender of Mr Rusbatch for repairing and top-dressing the tennis courts was accepted. Mr H. R. Marks, who has been secretary of the Board for the past five years, tendered his resignation, as he will be leaving the district on March Ist. The Board accepted bis resignation with regret, and expressed appreciation of his services as secretary. The Library Committee met in the school, the following being present: Mesdames Harris and Baker, Messrs J. Cooling, K. Quaid, and H. Marks. Mr Mcintosh sent apology for absence. The secretary reported that the library was being well supported, and that the credit balance was about £5. Mrs MeLeod having gone to the North Island to reside, resigned from the committee, and Mrs H. Cooling was elected to fill the vacancy. The secretary, Mr Marks, also resigned, as he will be leaving the district shortly, and it was decided to ask Miss Humphreys to act as secretary pro tern.

A spell of splendid harvest weather is being experienced in the Woodbury district, and farmers are having a busy time getting the crops in. It is expected that the yields will be very good this year.

Miss A. M. Humphreys (Ashburton) is at present relieving at the Woodbury SchooL At the last meeting of the committee, the headmaster reported that the roll number was down to 35, and it is hoped that more pupils will be enrolled shortly in order to keep up the grade of the school. Mr Marks resigned his position as headmaster, as he has been appointed to a similar position at Greenpark. ORARI. At the monthly meeting of the General Committee of the Orari Tennis Club, Miss N. Wood presided. Wet weather interfered with Ihe playing of the singles tournament before Christmas, and it was decided to cancel the games played and replay the tournament under new conditions at Easter. It was resolved to invite entries for fl doubles handicap tournament, to be played for club trophies, on Saturday, February 23rd. Owing to the resignation of Mr T. Hughes, Master JRooney was appointed caretaker. Miss K- Norman is leaving f° r Christchurch on Saturday, having re ~ ceived word of her appointment as a probationary nurse there.
