NORTH CANTERBURY.

, CHEVIOT., A Christchurch cricket team, captained by Mr C. Hayes, visited Cheviot during the week-end and played a match with the local club- The visitors wpn by 134 runs to' 104. For the visitors W. Cunningham 27, C. Jackman 14, I. Hamilton 26, M. Lindley 17, C. Hayes 18, -were the top scorers, and for the loca lteam W. A. Macfarlane 46, W. Owen 13, and, A. Fuller 10. The visitors were entertained at lunch and afternoon tea. An invitation to come again was cordially aC At* a meeting of the committee of the Cheviot A. and P. Association, Mr D, H. Milne presided.. The Cheviot Trotting Club and the Cheviot Football Club were granted the use of the ground for the coming season. On account of his transfer from the district, Mr ,C. England tendered bis resignation as a member of the committee. The resignation was accepted with regret, -and Mr John Taylor was appointed to the vacancy. It was decided to alter the date for the annual show from March 28th to April 4th, 1929, as the former date was too dose to Easter to siiit competitors. Judges for the various sections were appointed. The. committee decided that : in the pony trot and pony gallop events the ponies must be Under 14J hands and the' riders under 15 years of age. It was decided to give the Presbyterian Ladies' Guild first option 'for the catering at the show- Arrangements for the charging and collection of stand fees discussed and* decided. Entries for the annual show will close on March 16th. The president and secretary were appointed to approach the football and trottirig clubs regarding sharing . the cost of putting down a new culvert at the entrance gates. LOBUKN. A surprise party recently visited the home of Mr and Mrs H. James to bid farewell to Miss Irene James, who is leaving the district. Dancing and' games were indulged in on the lawn, and a delicious supper was provided by the ladies. At a meeting of the Eangiora-Lo-burn Fruitgrowers' Association Mr J. W. Macleod presided. Members reported that picking for export will begin in about a fortnight. There is an abundant crop of apples, rain falling at the right time to give the necessary moisture. Farmers everywhere have taken advantage of the fine weather to push on with the harvest. Very little grain is now standing, while stacking is in full swing. Threshing machines are also busy. Monsignor Byrne, of Brisbane, who has been the guest of his sister, Mrs J. Joyce, of North Loburn, leaves today on his return to Australia. During his three weeks' stay he celebrated Mass in the Catholic Church at Loburn on each Sunday, and preached at the eleven o'clock Mass at Bangiora on Sunday last. j _ A long-felt want in the district is being supplied by a passenger bus which leaves the post office corner each morning for Christehurch, returning in the evening.. Hitherto the nearest passenger bus or train had to be.met in Bangiora, consequently great satisfaction I* being expressed.

WAIKUKU. The Rev. Mr Werren, of Christchurch, conducted the service at the Waikuku Church anniversary. There was a large congregation. The evening service was taken by the Rev. Mr James, of Papanui. Anthems were given at both services by the choir, and solps were sung by Mrs J. Morriss and the Rev. Mr Nelson. - A pleasant evening was 6pent at the home of Miss Cross on Tuesday, when the Waikuku Girls' Club held a meeting. The evening was enjoyably passed in sewing and musical items, contributed by Miss Cross. Supper was served by the hostess. BELFAST. The annual picnic of the Belfast school was held on Monday last, about 500. adults and children undertaking the long journey to Otira. This is a de. parture from the orthodox type of school outing, which consists usually of a train journey, a sports programme and games. The opportunity of visiting one of New Zealand's beauty spots was given therefore to many families who might not' otherwise manage to make the trip. - The weather was ideal, and the walk through the Gorge, which was undertaken by a considerable number of old and young, was classed as compensation for the long train journey. Sweets and fruit were dispensed freely throughout the journey. SPRINGFIELD. The garden fete in aid of the Anglican Church funds, held in the picturesque grounds of the Mt. Torless© homestead, was a great success. Mr and Mrs Johnson and the various stall-holders all worked hard, and the sum of £4B was collected. Miss Mullay was the winner of the cushion presented by Mrs "Undrill. f . . TAI TAPU. The flag at the school was flown at half-mast as a mark of respect to Mrs John Heinzmann, who died at her home on Monday afternoon at the age of 62 years. She was formerly Miss Annie Gerken, of Greenpark. The late Mrs Heinzmann was highly esteemed as a neighbour and friend and until prevented by ill-health she always took an active and keen interest in any good work to benefit the district She leaves a son and whom the deepest sympathy is felt. Her husband predeceased her a few "^The 3 funeral, which was attended by many friends, took place vesterdav afternoon, the service at the house and the graveside being conducted by the Rev Mr Harris (Tai Tapu) and Rev. Theo Paterson (Kirwee). The chief mourners were Mr Jack Heinzmann (son) ) and Mr C- Shuttle worth (son-in-law) ' The pall-bearers were Messrs J. Gilmou'r, C. Watson, W L. Morgan. H Pavne I>.
