A PRIVATE CITIZEN.
MR AL. SMITH VACATES OFFICE. (VVtTKD PBCSS ASBOGUTIOW —BV BLBCTKC TELEGBJLPH —COPXBIGHT.) NEW YORK, January 1. At Albany Mr Franklin Roosevelt was to-day inaugurated Governor of New York State, and Mr A 1 Smith, the Democratic candidate for the Presidency, became a private citizen, after having served four terms as Governor and stent 25 years in public life. Both the incoming and outgoing Governors reviewed a military parade from the stand in front of the Executive mansion, after which they motored to the Capitol for the formal ceremonies. Crowds lined the streets at every point, cheering both Messrs Roosevelt and Smith, but particularly the latter, who was visibly affected by the demonstration. Touching scenes also occurred when the retiring Governor bade farewell to his staff, many being in tears. Mr Smith left for New York on the conclusion of the ceremonies.— Australian Press Association.
