TIMARU, January 2. The annua! sports meeting of the South Canterbury Caledonian Society was concluded on the Society's grounds at Patiti Point today, under ideal weather conditions. There was a large attendance of the public. The cycling proved interesting, and the surprise of the day came in the final race, when A. J. Hansen (Waimate) broke away in the last lap and won from A. C. Ritchie (Christchurch). His win was a very popular one. In the one and a-half mile Caledonian Wheel Race, li. Pither (Christchurch) covered the distance in 3min 8 3-ssec, the fastest time registered on the Timaru track. He passed the Seld on the bend, but was strongly challenged by Ritchie, who, however, failed to overtake him. Ritchie, on entering a protest against Pither for crossing in the straight, was loudly hooted by a section of the crowd. The Protest Committee decided that W. Willmott (Timaru) was to blame, and he was subsequently fined. Another spill occurred in the half-mile second-class bicycle race, when on entering the straight for the last time C. Smith fell and brought down H. Orton and A. Hesketta. Fortunately no one suffered any serious injury, but Orton received abrasions. Some very good finishes were witnessed in the running events, especially in the 880 yds Amateur Handicap, whan N. J. Suckling (Christchurch) ran an excellent race from scratch to beat C. J. Thompson (syds) by about ten yards. In the amateur high jump event R. H. Neville (Christchurch) jumped exceptionally well, clearing sft llin. He attempted to jump 6ft, but failed. His successful attempt at sft llin may be classed amongst the best I performances recorded by New Zealand J amateurs. , « Keen interest was taken in the dancing events. Miss Daphne Allan was again the outstanding competitor, winning the South Island championship Ghillie Callum event for girls under 16, Highland fling for girls under 13, New Zealand championship event for girls under 14, sailor's hornpipe for girls under 12, and the Highland fling for girls under 14.
