GERALDINE.
FIRE. On Tuesday morning the Geraldine Fire Brigade received a call to an outbreak of fire in the rear of Mr J. Sutherland's blacksmith shop. The brigade was quickly on the scene and soon had the fire under control, but not before considerable damage had been done. The premises where the fire originated are occupied by Mr D. Brett. A. motor-car, the property of Afr E. Undrill, which was being re-painted, was destroyed. The buildings were, cohered by insurance, but both Mr Sutherland and Mr Brett are heavy losers. Mr Brett was working on the car at the time, and the origin of the fire is a mystery. , The Weather. After a fortnight of fine summer weather rain began to fall early on Tuesday morning, and . continued throughout the day and night. Yesterday the sum shone brightly and.there was every evidence of settled conditions. Mount Peel and the surrounding hills have received a thick coating of 6now. Shearing is now in full swing in the district and the recent rains have not interferred with operations to any great extent. Garden Party. To-day the ladies of the Geraldine Presbyterian Church are holding a garden party at the residence of Mr A. A. Readdie, Raukapuka. A good mjisical programme has been arranged, including artists from Ohristchurch and Timaru.
