LEMON GROWING.
"PEDIGREE" VARIETIES AND BUDS., FINDING BEST TYPE. [THE PBBBS BpMUI Service.] WELLINGTON, November 8. "Pedigree" lemons are the latest effort of the Institute of Horticulture. On a specially worked fruit farm near Auckland the New Zealand Institute of Horticulture is raising 1000 lemon trees from specially selected buds. These have been gathered from the best New Zealand trees and from choice buds in New South Wales, South Australia, and California. Taking as a basis an analysis of the lemons of California, Australia, and New Zealand, the Institute is now embarking upon the task of determining the best type of lemon tree for New Zealand soil. Working selected buds of known history and known varieties the experimental farm will watch the improvement gained over a period of years. The buds from the best bearing branches of these trees will then be taken and from these new trees raised. The fruit from the trees .then raised will be carefully compared with the ordinary crop fruit and the improvement studied. The whole scheme will take 20 years to develop, but results are expected within the next four or five years. Then buds from the best trees will be available to growers who wish to improve their orohards.
