AUCKLAND CITY BY-ELECTION.

. ♦ —- MEETING OF EXECUTIVE. The executive of the Canterbury Progress League met last night. Present: Messrs J. E. Strachan (president), G. M. Hall, W. Goss, H. W. Heslop, Frank Thompson, C. H. Clibborn, G. H. Judd, 0. H. Burßon, W. P. Glue, J. A. Flesher, G. Maginness, W. K. McAlkine, J. Jd. Blackwell, J. Mackenzie, Geo. Shipley, and P. E. Climie (organiser). The chairman reported that with Government and City Council subsidies the unemployed fund benefited to the extent of £ISOO as the result of the functions in connesdon with the Tasinan flight. This satisfactory result was due largely to the foresight and organising ability of Mr Climie. (Applause.) Mr- J. H. Hall, editor of the "Sun," waited on the executive and asked for its co-operation in the matter of an appeal to the public for subscriptions to complete the amount necessary to erect a statue to Captain Cook in Christchurch, towards which £SOO had been promised by a Christchurch citizen who desired to remain anonymous. ' It was decided to organise a public meeting to consider the matter and to set up a representative committee. To the Eailway Committee was referred a suggeution for a South Island "cruising train" tour, with the instruction to report to the executive's next meeting. It was decided to comply with the request of the Wairarapa Progress League for the loan of the Canterbury League's organiser, Mr Climie, for ten days to assist in reviving the Wairarapa League. The. organiser was asked to write to Commander Byrd offering to arrange for motor transport for him from Picton to Dunedin. To a committee consisting of Messrs Clibborn, Heslop, Stevenson, and Flesher was referred a letter from Mr Godfrey Hall complaining regarding alterations in the conditions of the telephone party line system. Cr. Holdcn was appointed the representative of the Sumner Borough Council on the executive of the League.
