OAKS DAY

Pride Wins Good Race

CANTERBURY CUP.

Summerlike weather prevailed for the third day's programme of the Canterbury Jockey Club's Metropolitan Meeting, held at Riccarton yesterday, and the ever-popular "Ladies' Day" attracted an attendance well up to that of previous years. The course and grounds were in splendid order, and Biccarton probably never looked better under the favourable conditions prevailing. The racing generally was of an interesting nature and the public fared reasonably well in their efforts to select the winners, and no outsiders prevailed as was the case on the two previous days. As_a result, speculation was well maintained, and in spite of a- three horse field in the Canterbury Cup, the total handled amounted to £39,541, as compared with £11,034 on the third day last year, a decrease of £1493. The returns for the three completed days amounted to £141,786, as against £160,425 twelve months' ago. The contest for the Canterbury Cup was most disappointing owing to only -three of the candidates facing the starter, and one of those had had a severe race over nine furlongs under a big weight only two hours before. The result was never in doubt once Laughing Prince made his effort, and he recorded an easy victory for the Wanganui owner, Mr T Duncan, who has had a most successful innings with the Australian-bred horse since he acquired him for 1000 guineas last sea-, son. He is trained by the Fordell mentor, F. Tilley, who thu3 led in an important winner on the eve of his retirement. The New Zealand Oaks provided a close finish, Mr G. D. Greenwood'sfilly. Pride, narrowly beating the Chokebore representative Prickles, who had been the public fancy for some weeks before the race,.but receded in favour owing to her disappointing display on Monday. Pride was only making her third appearance under silk and was not raced as a two-year-old. She was bred by her owner, who also derived double pleasure in the victory by the fact that, he bred the filly's sire, Sutala, and her dam. Egotism. The minor events were well contested and in most cases fast times were registered. The following are details of the racing:— SUBURBAN HANDICAP, of 250 sovs; second 50, third 25. 9f. 1. Sir Geo. Rascal was fourth. Time, 1.25. Winner trained byowner, Riccarton. NOTES ON THE RACING. A Profitable Bracket. The opening event, the Suburban Handicap, proved a triumph for' the Chokebore stable, whose two representatives, Quarterdeck and Broadmoor, finished first and second. Broadmoor was the pacemaker from the dispatch and led along the back and into the straight from Beaumont, Quarterdeck, and Shining Armour, with Black Mint and Chickwheat in the rear. Quarterdeck tackled Broadmoor inside the distance, and holding the upper hand in the run to the post, beat her stablemate by Half a ] length. Black -Mint finished on the best of. the remainder to gain third money, ] three lengths away, in front of Shining Armour, Beaumont, Chickwheat, and Apple Dighton. Nothing had a chance with the Choke-, bore pair, who were sent out a good favourite selection, but.'on account of being bracketed, paid a remunerative price. Black Mint was Bore going out, and ran only moderately. Shining Armour failed to show any of the pace he exhibited in the New Zealand Cup, while Beaumont closed up long before the post was reached. Chickwheat again failed to reproduce his track form, and must by now have tried the patience of his connexions. Speed Light Wins Easily. Nedda was the only withdrawal from the Spring Nursery, for which Gold Tinge-carried over seven hundred tickets more than were entrusted to Aspiring I and Speed Light, who were fairly evenly supported. As the, false rail was ' reached, Speed Light was in front of j Passbook, Gold Tinge, Belcaire, and ■ Francolin. Once headed for the post Speed Light left her field and won without pressure, by a length and a half from the favourite, who beat the fast- finishing .Duellona by a length. Passbook was a head away in fourth place, followed by Francolin, False Scent, and Aspiring. Speed Light from No. 2 at the barrier was one of the smartest to begin, and had the race won at any part. Gold Tinge showed further improve-

I ment, and finished on well. Duellona, by Paladin, from War Lady, again put in good work from a long way back, while Passbook weakened in the last furlong. Some bumping took place at the false rail, Passbook interfering with Belcaire and Aspiring. The latter got away smartly, but was not in a winning position when she met with trouble. Francolin again ran well in spite of the hard racing she has been subjected to. A Consistent Galloper. A splendid finish was witnessed in the Otaio Plate, four of the runners being in a bunch at the post. Kilperon acied as pacemaker until the straight was reached, Vaward, Royal Game, Historic, Beau Geste, Lucy Locket, and Malmsey following him into the straight in that order. The field ran in close formation from the top of the straight, and a hundred yards off the post Historic was in charge, but Lucy Locket tackled him, and in an exciting tussle secured the judge's verdict on the post. Sir Roy was half a length away, a neck in front of Beau Geste, with Kilperon, Imarosebud, and Royal Game the next to finish. The winner displayed marked stamina and worried the favourite out of the honours. She has been a very consistent performer this season, and the same remark applies to Historic, who has recorded two wins and two seconds in his last four starts. Sir Eoy was near the tail of the field at the home turn, and was set a hard task to get near the : leaders. He finished on in a resolute \ manner, and better placed early, would . have troubled the dividend payers. Beau ' Beste was always in the picture, but the ] veteran, Nukumai raced in a rear posi-' tion throughout, and he and Malmsey were well back at the finish. , Easy for Laughing Prince. The contest for the Canterbury Cup was robbed of much interest by the defection of Rapier, who was suffering from the effects of being galloped on ■ in the New Zealand, Cup, one of his I back tendons being injured. Black Mint, with the' prospect of collecting easy place, money, was again produced, j Laughing. Prince was a staunch favourite, and carried over two-thirds of the ' machine total of close on £IBSO. Count ! Cavour led Laughing Prince throughout the journey until the run home was commenced, where the latter went past him and the race was over, the favourite prevailing by three lengths. Black Mint made an effort to oust Count ' i Cavour from second place in the final ■ stages, but the latter held his position ' and had an advantage of a length at the ,' post. The pace over the greater part : of the journey was slow, the first six :: furlongs taking 1.21, and the initial : mile 1.46 2-5. • ] Crown Area's Attractive Win. ' i The public voted solidly for Bright l ' Glow and Celerity 11. in the Jockey j' Club Handicap, the former going out a ! • two hundred ticket better fayourite, but < neither shared in the money. Goblin ! Market, was the first away, and led ; round the far turn and into the straight from Set Sail, Bright Glow, and Benzora ' .together. Crown Area, who was in be- j: hind this bunch entering the straight, ; shot through at the distance post and headed Goblin Market, but the latter : made a further effort and in a good finish Crown s Area only gained a head advantage. Set Sail fought out the ' finish from the home turn, but weakened : into third place a length away from '■ the second horse. Benzora was a moderate fourth, and then came Solrose, Bright Glow, and Battle Colours, with i Celerity n. last. | Crown Area raced in the colours of | his new owner, and rewarded him with : a very profitable victory. He was fav-1 oured with an opening at the top of the ! straight and put in some attractive work '' to draw level with Goblin Market. The ' latter ran a solid race, throughout, and , showed plenty of fight at the business ; end. Bright Glow had every chance on i the rails, but could not finish' on, while Celerity 11, in trying to get through between Goblin Market and Bright Glow at the distance post, was sent back and lost any chance she had, finishing last. 3attle Colours was always at the tail of the field, and registered a poor performance. The race-was run at a fast pace; the last four furlongs being covered in 47 4-5.

.The Classic. The New Zealand Oaks Stakes attracted seven runners, Bonrose declining her engagement. ' Sarnia wound up a nine hundred ticket better favourite than the Chokebore bracket, Childsplay and Prickles. Childsplay was the smartest away, and going out of the straight opened up a.big gap from Prickles, with another break to the remainder, headed by Pride. Childsplay steadied up the field entering the back stretch, and Prickles joined her, and this pair piloted the field to the far turn. At the bend approaching the straight Prickles headed Childsplay and led into the' home run from Sarnia and Pride together. Sarnia tackled trickles inside the distance, but failed to go on, and then Pride put in a determined run on the outside. Prickles responded gamely, but Pride wore her down in the last few strides and gained a meritorious victory by half a length. Sarnia was a length away, clear of Childsplay, who was followed home by Lucky Light, Koyal Flower, and Calamine. Pride had done no racing prior to this Meeting, but.her' effort over nine furlongs, on Tuesday pointed to her prospects. Prickles ran better than her previous form at the' Meeting suggested, and went under only after a game finish. Sarnia showed promise when she drew up to Prickles, but lacked the stamina to see out the long journey. The remainder were never in the picture. ■ .» ■ A Close Finish. Waterlow, Wreath, of Myrtle, and Smithereens were the defections from the Ashley Handicap, for apprentice riders. The Blenheim-trained Freezeout was a staunch'favourite, but was decisively beaten into third place. Swoopalong was the first to show out from the start, Solf ello, All Comment, and Bank Draft getting away badly. Swoopalong piloted the field round the far turn, her nearest attendants being Phastar, The Viacotr.t, Freezeout, and Some Lad. Swoopalong was still in charge turning for home, and led into the straight from Phastar, Bank Draft, Freezeout, and the Viscount, with Amor making a forward move on the outside. Inside the distance. Amor joined the Isader, and in a hard tussle to the post Amor got in the deciding stride to beat the Chokebore filly by a neck. Freezeout was three lengths away, in front of Phastar, The Viscount, Haze, Bank Draft, All Comment, and Solf ello, with Some Lad last. This was Amor's second success since his present owner acquired him early last season, and his recent racing suggests he has become more solid than was the case last term. He was ridden a confident race by the stable apprentice W. Pascoe, who commenced his career' at the Meeting. Swoopalong, by the Australian sire Marchalong, ran a promising race, and was responsible for a fast pace throughout. She has done very little racing to date, and - will improve from this onwards . Speedy Gay Sonnet. Kilbronsyth was the only withdrawal from the concluding event, the Avon Handicap, and in a good betting pool the second biggest of the day, King Midas and Gay Sonnet carried close on half the investments between them. The race was an easy proposition for Gay Sonnet, who, drawing the inside position, was soon in front and opened

up a tluee lengths' gap in the first two ', furlongs. She had this advantage from King Midas, Gold Brick, Money Mine, | and Silver Coot entering the straight, j; and was not afterwards troubled, winning by that margin from the favourite, ' who was a length in front of Money I Mine. Eascal was fourth, and then came Gold Brick, Decoy Bird, Taboo, Silver Coot, and Spean Bridge, with Desert Lad last. Gay Sonnet had the field in trouble from the jump off, and her victory was one of the most pronounced of the Meeting. King Midas again had to be content with second money, and his turn may come on Saturday. Outside of Money Mine the remainder made poor showings. HANDICAPS FOR SATURDAY The following handicaps have been declared for next' Saturday by Mr J. E. Henrys.' PORT COOPER HURDLES, of 250' sovs. lgm.
