The management of the Winter Garden announces the usual Cabaret Dance tor Saturday evening. Dancing will commence at 8.30 p.m. and continue until midnight. Tne Bailey-Marston Orchestra will be in attendance. As an added attraction Miss Bessie Macdonald's Cabaret dancers will dance a ballet with Miss Muriel Johns as vocalist.

The committee of the Selwyn Kindergarten, held a "coin afternoon" at which a large number of parents and friends attended. Miss Hull gave a ..short address and the children gave a delightful programme. After the Uttle folks had gone through their various items afternoon tea was dispensed. ON THE LAWN AT ADDINGTON.

The glorious sunshine and the certainty of a really enjoyable day's sport, tempted thousand of ladies to attend the Metropolitan Trotting Club's Meeting at Addington yesterday. It was a wonderful outing. Never before has the crowd been so dense, even at Addington, and that is saying a great deal. And certainly, never before, has the frocking been so colourful, so varied, and so attractive. There was a time, not so far distant, when tailored suits and small hats were considered. the correct wear tor trotting meetings. Not so nowadays. The frocks yesterday were, in many cases, daintv and charming, printed crepe de chine and georgettes being in high favour. Blue, in varying tones, n-as the most popular colour with beige and honey colour as its most important rivals. THE RACE BALL.

A BRILLIANT GATHERING. Last night, at the Caledonian Hall, the Canterbury' Jockey Club's race ball, which is annually preceded by most pleasurable anticipation, proved a most delightful gathering. The decorations, at once dignified and festive, contributed a generous quota to the general spectacular effect. The front of the was defined with a row; of pelargoniums, flanked at each end by bowls of tall pink hawthorn. The opposite end of the hall was arranged as a comfortable lounge, gay and bright with rhododendrons and irises. In the middle of the ball-room was a raised dais, with trellised sides, decorated with pink roses, and here was ensconced Margaret Middleton's band, which supplied the dance music. NAVY LEAGUE MORNING TEA.

A DUAL FUNCTION

A delightful dual function took place yesterday morning in the Navy League Hall, when a morning tea was given at which "au revoir" was said by members of the general committee and of the Women's Auxiliary Cbmmittee of the League to Commander A. D Boyle, vice-president of the League, who has been transferred to Timaru, and at which members met Mr Percy Hutchison the London actor-manager who, with his company is appearing at the Theatre Royal, and who was awarded the Special Service Decoration by the parent League Mr Hutchison served as a naval lieutenant dur ing the great war and' afterwards keenly interested himself in work for returned sailors and soldiers. The hall was artistically deebrated with flowers and bunting for the occasion. Mr J. J. Dougall, the president { extended a welcome to Mr Hutchison, who, in acknowledgment, spoke of .his interest in Navy League work. Mr Hutchison said that when he returned Home he would be able to report to the Council of the Navy League regarding the splendid and magnificent work that the League is doing throughout New Zealand. He recited with moving effect, "The Passing of the Kings, by an American authoress, Vilda Owen, the poem being noteworthy for its praise of England's King. The recitation was warmly applauded. Mr Dougall paid a tribute to the work done for the League by Com-, mander A. D. Boyle and regretted his departure for Timaru, but hoped, that s it would not be, long. before he'-was-Jmck again in Christchurch. ' Mr C. J. Treleaven. secretary of the League, also testified to the excellent work done for the League by Commander Boyle and expressed the hope that he would be instrumental in reviving the Timaru branch of the League. , Commander Boyle expressed his regret at leaving the Navy League work in Chrißtchureh, but hoped to do something towards reviving the Timaru branch.

The gathering closed with the singing of a verse or the National Anthem. Those present were: Mr J. J. Dougall (president) and Miss Dougall, Mr Percy . On Friday last, "when the Christchurch Polo Club's season opened, the polo grounds were not in suitable condition for playing, so practice games were played in Hagley Park, opposite Park terrace. Yesterday, the first games of the season were played on the polo grounds and were watched by a large number of interested spectators, including many visitors to Christchurch for the raoes.
