UNEMPLOYED AND UNION DUES.
SECRETARY DENIES REPORT. In the "Newsletter" for October 27th appeared a statement to the effect that in respect of men given work on relief works in Christchurch, a labour secretary goes on to the works on the second day of engagement and demands dues, 10s apiece, m addition to twelve months' dues, telling the men that unless they pay they will get no further W °This statement is given in the "Newsletter" as an extract from a communication received, by Mr Coates from "a prominent Christchurch citizen. Mr H Worrall, secretary of the Canterbury General Labourers' _ Union, which has an award covering the Christchurch City Council has written to Mr Coates giving a definite denial to the statement. He says that he has never requested men on rel.ef works to join the union. He also has forwarded a copy of the union's rules, which provide for an entrance fee of 5s and Weekly contributions of 6d. Members of kindred unions are accepted without paying any entrance fe jlr H. G. Livingstons, the secretary of the Reform organisation in Canterbury when the letter was shown to him, said that the Reform executive n Christchurch had never heard of the matter; and was in no way responsible for the transm.ss.on of the information to the "Newsletter.
