CRICKET.

CANTERBURY V. MINOR ASSOCIATIONS.

LOCAL SIDE IN THE LEAD

There was little Interesting play yesterday in the cricket match played on the Hagley Park oval between teams representing Minor Associations and Canterbury. The local side was too strong for its opponents in all departments. However, the play livened up in the late afternoon when some of the Canterbury batsmen began to go for the bowling.

In the early part of the Minor Associations' innings it appeared that their batting was to be a debacle. Indeed, half the side were out with the very meagre total of 17 runs on the board, before a stand was made between S. Mason and K. G. Nicol. But both batsmen were cautious and the score mounted very slowly. The best partnership of the innings was that between S. Mason and B. McSherry. McSherry played a very good innings for his 30, showing excellent scoring shots, including some fine straight and cover drives. His innings was marred by few mistakes. Mason, while being cautiouß to an unnecessary degree at times, played an innings Invaluable to his side, turning what promised to be a rout into quite a respectable showing. His caution was justified, perhaps, by his side's precarious position. Canterbury's out-cricket was, on the whole, very good, and the bowling was very consistent throughout. S. G. Lester was the outstanding bowler, and his figures wore rather remarkable. Of the nine overs he bowled, seven were maidens and he took three wickets tor four runs. Lester has, until recently, been regarded solely as a batsman, but now he is developing accuracy in his trundling, and is meeting with no small measure of success. A right-hand medium-paced bowler, his off-breaks, which nip in very quickly, always require watching, Bellamy bowled very steadily and accurately. Merritt's trundling was patchy, and although he frequently had the batsmen "scratching,' he bowled many loose balls and his length was not always of the best. He Improved greatly in the afternoon, when he was responsible for breaking up some strong partnerships.

Canterbury get out to catch up their opponents' score of 173 in brisk fashion. Gondhne, the Canterbury captain, was in sparkling form. With forceful strokes all round the wicket he quickly ran up 83 out of a total of 44, finally being well caught right on the leg boundary. Hamilton was more P? I ®!' taking, and was not able to pierce the field. Later, however, he opened out with some well-executed. leg strokes and good coverdrives. He gave two hard chances, one after he had passed his century. Jacobs gave a very hard hitting display, and his score incluo* ed several sixes. Merritt batted soundly out brightly. Hobbs did not appear comfortable at any stage, and survived five appeals lot lbw before falling to a brilliant catch at legScores: MINOR ASSOCIATIONS.
