RANGIORA.

The Rangiora County. Council met yesterday. Present—Messrs W. Stalker (chairman), H. Tallott, R. Macdonald, A.. Mcintosh, and 6. K. Orysell. The financial statement showed the bank debit balance to be £2276 5s lOd.

The county foreman. reported that a traffic tally was taken for the Public Works Department on the Oxford road and at the Ashley concrete bridge. The Swannanoa road bridge was commenced, out owing to bad weather and not being able to get material, practically nothing had been done beyond making a start. Grading work had been done by the tractor on the main highways and side roads. The Hon. Mr Buddo, M.P., wrote enclosing a copy of a letter from the PostmasterGeneral, intimating that a post office building at Oust will be proceeded with. Mr Buddo was thanked for his assistance in the matter.

A letter was received from Messrs Booth, Macdonald and 00. stating that their charge for the hire of the scarifier would be £ls for eight days, and in the event of the machine, being purchased the hire charge would be deducted from the purchase- price. A letter was received from the clerk to the Ashburton County Council regarding relief to counties from the high hospital levies, and suggesting that a conference of South Island counties should be held and discuss the matter, and asking that a delegate be sent to a conference to be held in Ashburton in March next. It was agreed to send a delegate. if the conference is held. A letter wrb received from Mr V. W. Purkert regarding the movement on foot promoted by the owners of heavy vehicles with the object of inducing the Government to discontinue the regulation which authorises local authorities to charge heavy traffic license fees, and asking for information on the, question. The matter was left in the hands of the clerk to give the desired information.

Mr R. Moyle was appointed ranger. The tender of Mr W. Anderson, for dog collars was accepted.

SjELWYN. The monthly meeting of the Selwyn County Council was held on; Monday. Present —Crs F. J. Andrews (chairman), W. Stone, W. Inch,.W. Gilmour, S. E. Pearson, G. Hight, N. Brown, and T. D. Jarman. Leave of absence wsb granted Cr. G. Hall. A motion of sympathy was passed to the relatives of the late Mr John Cunningham.' The Engineer reported that Con ton's roai and Doody's road had been groded. In the Rakaia Riding the metalling of the Dun-eandol-Hororata Main Highway was well in hand. In Coleridge Riding .patching on Leech's' and Rockwood roads was in progress. ' Downs road West had been graded from Fairfield bridge to the otp of the Rakaia Gorge cutting. The putting in of stormwater pipes on the Rakaia Gorge bridge road has been commenced. Cr N. >l. Brown was appointed to represent ' the Council at. a meeting of local authorities to elect a member of the SpringsEllesmere Power Board, in place' of Mr John Cunningham, deceased.
