MAGISTERIAL.

TUESDAY. (Before Mr E, D. Mosley, 5.31.) . DRUNKENNESS.

A first offender for 'drunkenness was fined 20s, in default twenty-four hours' imprisonment with hard labour. IDLE AND DISORDERLY.

In order that enquiries might be made as to whether Arthur Hudson, aged 73 years, might be committed to the Old Men's Homo of Ashburton, he was remanded from Friday on a charge of being an idle and disorderly person. He appeared again ,on the same charge. Reports as to thu man's condition were submitted to the Court by Sub-Inspector EitaPatrick. He had left the Home before last January, and his conduct had been such that they did not want him back. Tho remand had. beun granted as the Court had either to send the accused to gaol or commit him to the Home on application. The Magistrate said that gaol was a place for punishment, and not a place to which old men, who had.not done any harm, should be sent. The Hospital Board and the Charitable Aid Board had refused to commit Hudson to the Home on. the application of the Health Officer.. He was faced with the posi' tion that the old man had.to be turned out on to the streets to beg, borrow, or. steal. ,;..On behalf' of the' Salvation 1 Army, Major Barnes offered to. take the old man in, and this Was agreed t'o : by the Magistrate.

I „Hudsqn was convicted and .ordered-.to aome it p 1 for sentence if called' upon'-within-: twelve months. .-. ■•.■•'■
