THE WIZARD OF FINANCE.
TO THE EDITOR OF THE PRESS Sir, —I well remember attending a meeting of working men in Christchurch sometime in the early 'nineties. The meeting had been called for 5.16 P m. by Sir Joseph Ward, who was on his way north or south and could not stay for the evening, [n his address he said: "Now, gentlemen, our opponents charge us with having seized the Local Bodies Loans Sinking Funds amounting to about £86,000. We have done nothing of the sort. (Applause.) What we have done is simply tniß, we have borrowed money on the security of those sinking funds: You, gentlemen, will understand the difference!" (Prolonged applause.) I can vouch for the above words being practically verbatim. The Government of the day nrast have been hard up for money when it raised it in that way, mortgaging other people's funds to relieve a financial embarrassment.—Yours, etc., OLD TIMER.
