" CAVALIER TREATMENT.?

MR MADELEY'S COMPLAINT.

(UHITED PHESB ASSOCIATION?—BT ELECTRIC TELEOBAFH—COFTRIOHT.)

(Received November sth, 5.5 p.m.)

CAPE TOWN, November 4. Mr W. B. Madeley publishes his reply to General Hertzog in a stronglyworded letter, in which he complains of cavalier treatment, alleging that he has been subjected to humiliating conditions, growing more marked and aggressive during recent months, and forcing it upon his conviction that such an attitude was intended only to make his continuance as a member of the Cabinet impossible. It is expected that Genera! Hertzog will formally resign to-morrow, immediately re-forming the Cabinet without Mr Madelev. It is highly probable, also, that Colonel F. H. P. Creswell will be offered the High Commissionership in London, shortly. Mr J C. Smit. the present holder of that office, having agreed to return to South Africa to assume the Administratorship of Transvaal Province, which has been rendered vacant by the expiry of Mr J» n Hofmeyer's "term.—Australian Press Association, United Service.

[General Hertzog invited Mr Madeley, who is Minister for Posts and leiegraphs, to resign owing to his recognising the Native Workers' Union in opposition to the General's request. As a result the Nationalist-Labour Pact is reported to be tottering to disruption. Mr Madelev refused to resign, and it was presumed that General Hertzog would pursue the same course as was followed by General Botha in 1912, dissolving and reconstructing Cabmet.J
