ASHBURTON.

PERSONAL.

Messrs E. J. O'Brien and E. Stephenson leave to-morrow on a trip to Mt. Cook. They intend to be away three weeks. Mr F. M. Gundry, of the Public Trust Office, Christchurch, will be in charge of the Public Trust Office here during Mr O'Brien's absence.

Pishing.

Anglers who visited the mouth of the Kangitata river during the weekend obtained fair results, although no large bags were taken. About 30 rods were out and fish up to 61b were caught. The Ashburton an<* Eakaia rivers were almost unfishable. The lakes were also visited, but only small catches were recorded.

Shearing Classes.

Under the direction of the Ashburton Technical School, classes in blade and machine shearing will be commenced at the Show Grounds this morning, and will extend over three weeks. Fourteen students have enrolled for the course and the instructor is Mr J. McCormick.

Abattoir Eeturns.

During October the following stock were slaughtered at the Municipal Abattoir: Cattle, 151; sheep, 793 (3 condemned); calves, 1; lambs, 11; pigs, 92 (1 condemned).

Defence Rifle Shooting.

The Ashburton Defence Kifle Club fired its first competition match of the season on Saturday, the conditions being 10 shots at 300 and 500 yards. Details are as follows: — 300 600

Cycling. The points gained for the Willowbridge Cup, awarded for a series _of races, conducted bv the Tinwald Cycling Club, are as follows:—W. J. Todd 10, G. Horton 10, O'Connor 9, J. O'Shea 6, J. O'Eeilly 2. School Concert. There was a large audience at St. Stephen's Parish Hall yesterday afternoon when junior pupils at the Ashburton Borough School gave a delightful concert in aid of the funds for a children's cot at the County Hospital. The programme was arranged by the children themselves, and it was one which did them infinite credit, both on the selection of the various items, and the pleasing and able manner in which each item was given. Borough Council. The Borough Council met last evening. Present —The Mayor (Mr E. Galbraith), and Messrs F. Z. D. Ferriman, W. H. Woods, W. H. Bundle, F. W. Seldon, J. Watson, J. Thompson, J. McElhinney, F. J. E. Smallbone, and E. Kerr. The financial statement showed that the sum of £834 3s 9d had been received since last meeting, and there was a credit of £52 15s 6d in the cemetery account. It was decided to support the Wellington City Council's protest to the Government against certain of the motor regulations. The Mayor reported that the local churches had agreed to commence the services at 10.45 a.m. next Sunday so that the two minutes' silence could be observed in commemoration of Armistice Day. The Council accepted an invitation to attend the service at St. Stephen's Church. The No ; 15 District Highways Board advised that it had decided to alter ttfe route of the Christchurch-Dunedin Main Highway by making it pass up East street as far north as the cemetery crossing. The Council would be entitled to a subsidy on maintenance. It was decided to thank the Council for the alteration.

The Ashburton Plunket Society wrote stating that the whole of the county had now been linked by the formation of sub-branches which were served by the Ashburton nurses. The sum of five guineas was granted. The Ashburton Motor-cycle Club was granted permission to make a charge for admission to its gymkhana to be held on the Domain top ground next month.

The Public Works Department wrote asking for certain information in view of the movement on foot to induce the Government to discontinue the regulations which authorised local bodies to charge heavy traffic license fees.

The Town Clerk and the chairman of the Works and Finance Committee wore requested to supply as much information as possible. The Rangiora Friendly Societies' Association was granted the use of the domain for its annual picnic on January 2nd. The Ashburton Croquet Club made application for first option over two of the Te Marae Lawn Tennis Club's old courts when the new courts were laid down.

Consideration was deferred until the courts were available.

MOUNT SOMERS.

Mr J. R. Lockhard presided over the monthly meeting of the Mount Somers School Committee. The Minister for Education intimated that he would meet a deputation from the district in regard to the proposed consolidation of schools. Mrs G. Green was appointed caretaker. It was decided to make the Bresentation of prizes on Wednesday, ecember 19th, and to hold a school picnic early in February. The committeemen's wives, together with the master's wife, were appointed a prize selection committee. The headmaster reported a roll of 60, with an average attendance of 53. The . secretary reported that. £6 had been netted from the socials held during the winter months. The Mount Somers Miniature Rifle Club held its final shoot of the season on Saturday, when a "quick firing contest" was held for a trophy presented bjp Mr G. A. Bland, whicli was won by C. Gluyas with a score of 95. P. G»kins, 84, topped the |unior score. A-

shoot-off between W. Morgan and B. Hood for the ladies' trophy resultedMorgan 68, Hood 67. MAYFIELD. There was a large attendance at the opening of the tennis, courts on Saturday afternoon, including a number of visitors from the Euapuna Club. The day, though fine in the early part of the afternoon, gave place to a strong nor'-west wind, and later rain began to fall, and play' had to be abandoned for the day. The captain of the club (Mr J.'Murdoch) welcomed the visitors, and hoped the coming season would equal the last one, which was a record for the club. Mr J. H. Patterson (captain Ruapuna Club) thanks. Mr W. Edis (president of the club) thanked the club for. the, honour they had done him in electing him president. He spoke of the splendid work done by a few enthusiasts, who had undoubtedly brought the club to itß present position. A handsome silver teapot has been given by Mrs A. Murdoch for competition in the ladies' singles, while Mr G. Murdoch has given a trophy for competition in the men's singles. The courts, which have recently been top-dressed, were in splendid order, and were constantly occupied up till the time rain set in. After* noon tea was served by the ladies.

METHVEN.

Farewell services were conducted by the Rev. F. A. Tooley on Sunday. At Holy Communion at 8 a.m. there was a large attendance. At 11 a.m. at Highbank there was another large attendance. At Evensong at All Saints', Methven, the church was crowded, when the vicar preached his farewell sermon in tho district and dedicated a handsome carved oak lectern which has been subscribed for by the members of the Sanctuary Guild. The vicar was the recipient of a collar box from the scholars of the Lyndhurst Sunday School on Sunday afternoon. Master Edward Gray made the presentation. The scholars of All Saints', Methven, through Miss May Dalton, presented him with a pair of motoring gloves.

DORIE.

The rainfall at Dorie for October was 1.96 inches. Rain fell on eleven days. The total rainfall recorded for the ten months of 1928 is 17.31 inches.
