ASHLEY.

The Ashley County Council met at Loburn. Present: Crs. D. K. Hutchison (chairman), Elisor, Fitzgibbon, McCracken, and Pulley. The chairman reported that the work in Lees Valley had been shown to the contractor, and a. start with shingling would be mado immediately. Recent floods had done damage to bridge approaches at the Washpool'and at the Makerikeri, Carr'a road. The former had been repaired, and the latter would receivo attention when the river became normal. Members agreed to inspect it later in the day. The Highways Board wrote, in reply to the Council's enquiry, stating that the motor vehicles regulations forbade parking cars at road bends at picnic resorts. The Board also forwarded approved specifications for bituminous work.

The tendency of flood waters to overflow roads at the Okuku and the Grey was commented on, and it was deemed advisable to keep the sites under observation. Dr. Telford, by invitation, interviewed the Council in the matter of the proposed joint health by-laws. Uniformity was desirable throughout the Canterbury district, and would materia'ly assist the local health inspectors. A C,ancil could exclude any portion of the by-law deemed inapplicable to the county. Dr. Telford stated that several large counties had already adopted the bylaws and other had assured him of early adoption. The Council decided to adopt the ty-laws with, the exception of Parts I. and rv. Mr Munro called on the Council with, regard to the occurrence, in places, of noxious weeds.
