NORTH CANTERBURY.

* RANGIORA. A Johnnie Sines comedy, entitled "Chinatown Charlie," will be screened at Everybody's, Town Hall this evening. Like all of this bright comedian's pictures, this is a genuinely funny affair, with a new sort of plot and an intriguingly Oriental atmosphere. On Thursday "The Shield of Honour" will be shown. It is a drama of the aerial secret service. On Saturday, J. Farrell McDonald will be seen in the comedv, "Bringing Up Father," based on the Geo. McManus cartoons. To-night also, "The Collegians," part two. will be screened. Box plans are at The Bristol and day sales are at the Golden Gate. The house in Northbrook road gutted by fire on Saturday night and owned by Mrs R. Kinley was insured in the Northern Insurance Co. for £IOO. HANMER SPRINGS. Mr F. N. Adams and the Misses Adams, of Clifton, Sumner, have taken Miss Stewart's bungalow for a term. Miss M Fawcett, \vbo has been staying with Mrs Mathieson, Culverden, lias returned to Hanmer Springs. The contractor for the Nurses' Home ■(Mr Calvert) has made a start getting in the foundations. WAIAU. So successful have members of the School Committee been in collecting donations towards the proposed school swimming baths, that they have been able to call tenders for the construction of the baths, and these will be considered at the next meeting of the committee. A hare-drive was held over the properties of Messrs A. H. Baker, A. M. Mcßae, Little Bros., K. Pettigrew, A. J. Sunckell, and P. R. Dearden. The weather was rather unfavourable, as the strong nor'wester caused the hares to lie very close. Nevertheless, a bag of 77 was shot Unfortunately, in the afternoon, heavy rain set in which caused the party to become disorganised, and some good country was left uncovered, otherwise the bag would have been considerably larger. Lambs are now making their appearance in the district, and flock-owners will anxiously look for more favourable weathor conditions than have prevailed during the past fortnight. There is a slight spring in the pastures, but with the heavy coating of snow on the ranges, frosts are likely to ensue and growth will be retarded The tournament for the Westenra Cup and the Rutherford -Handicap Cup, which was to have taken place on the Amuri Golf Links during the week-end, has been postponed till next week-end owing to the flooded state of the rivers preventing competitors from further north getting through. I OMIHI. The annual seven-a-side football tournament for Mr J. Sloss's banner took place at Omihi on Saturday. The results were: Omihi A beat Mount Vulcan, 8-0; Waipara 'beat Omihi B, 13-0. The losers played off, Mount -Vulcan defeating Omihi B 12-0. Stackhouse being M.C. At a meeting of Reform supporters held in the Omihi School on Saturday night, Mr W. Baxter was voted to the chair. Mr E. A. Foster was appointed delegate to attend the conference at Amberley on Thursday next, to select a candidate to contest the Hurunui seat. AMBERLEY. A well-attended meeting of Reform supporters from Amberley and Broomfieid districts was held in the library on Saturday night. , The following were appointed delegates to the conference to be held at Amberley on August 30th:—Messrs G. Fulton, S. H. Gardi* ner, F. Courage. F. Coleman, and 8. F. Croft.. * OXFORD. The Oxford W.O.T.U. met in the Coronation Hall. ' It was arranged to hold the birthday meeting one evening in September and to invite the "Y" Branch, and other friends. The president gave an account of the business done at the recent meeting of the North Canterbury District Executive. It was decided to send a delegate to . the District Convention to be held in Christchurch next month. The president read a brief extract showing the harmful effect of alcohol on the digestive organs. Miss Neil, of Rock Ford, forwarded a parcel of clothing and a cash donation for the Willard Home, Palmerston North. SPRINGFIELD. The football match played on Saturday between Sheffield and Springfield resulted in a win for the visitors by 14 points to nil. Mr R. Belgrave wag referee. The eighteen months old child of Mrs C. A. Denton had a narrow escape from serious injury, through being viciouslyattacked by a purebred rooster. When rescued the child had several holes pecked in its head, and was in an exhausted condition. Miss Dorothy Innes is on a holiday visit to Mrs Taylor (Waldon street, Timaru). Mr S. Denton (Cheviot), who has been on a visit to his son, Mr C. A. Denton, returns home to-day.

ASHLEY BANK. An enjoyable dance, under tho auspice* of the basketball club, was held in the school on Saturday evening. Musio was supplied by. Mr A. Withers <Sefton) extras'being contributed by Mr J. A. Petrie and Mrs W. .Day Mr W. G. Mayer made an efficient M.oSupper was served by the ladies. PREBBLETON. There was a good attendance at the Town Hall on Saturday evening on the occasion of a dance held under the auspices of the School Committee m aid of the annual picnic and prize fund. Music for the dancing was provided by Mrs K. Hammond, while Mr u. Downey acted as M.C. DARFIELD. There was a large attendance at a dance held by the Court Star of Greendale A.O.F. in the Darfield Memorial Hall. The music was supplied by tne Darfield Melody Players, with extras by Mr L. Westwood. Messrs H.. Holmes and H. Otten were M.C. s. The Glentunnel and Darfield football teams met here on Saturday, tunnel winning by 14 points to o. iWr H. Otten was referee. GREENPARK. 'The benedicts of Greenpark held their annual ball in tho Memorial Hall. The winners of the Monte Carlo dances were Miss Rickerby and Mr Perry and Miss Roberts and partner, while a lucky spot waltz was won by Miss Page and Mr Newall. Music was supplied by Smith's Marimba Band, and extras were plaved by Mrs A. H. Clark, Miss P. Suckling, and Mr D. Suckling. Messrs Lassen and Tronson were M.C s. The weather of late has been changeable with an occasional frost. A spell of warm, sunny weather would be appreciated by farmers. Herds and flocks have come through the winter in firstrate condition. Dairymen are getting busy, and lambs are making an appearance on many farms.
