SOCIAL AND PERSONAL. Mrs G. Virtue (Elizabeth street) is on a visit to Christchurch. Mrs A. M. Nicholson (Chalmers street) has returned from Christchurch. Mrs Earl (Christchurch) is the guest of Mrs Meehan, Sefton street. Mrs J. Moody (Te Weka street) and Mrs Parsons (Rangiora) have left on a visit to Peel Forest. Mrs C. W. Webber (Kitchener square) left yesterday for Waitati. Miss B. Newman (Nelson terrace) is expected to return from Wellington today. Mr and Mrs G. Bowker (Bidwill street) have returned from a visit to Christchurch. Recent arrivals at the Dominion Hotel include Mrs Meekle (Dunedin), Messrs G. K. Sutherland (Dunedin), D. S. Stewart (Dunedin), K. Murray (Christchurch), and F. Maclagan (Christchurch). Those who have registered at the Hydro Grand Hotel include Mrs C. R. Johnston' (Dunedin), Misses K. Johnston (Dunedin), R. Johnston (Dunedin), and Mr C. R. Johnston, jun. (Dunedin). Guests at the Grosvenor Hotel include Mr and Mrs R. D. Halstead (Dunedin), Mr and Mrs A. I. Mills (Ijondon), Mr and Mrs Gerald Rosenbaum (Wellington), Messrs P. J. Hopkins (Christchurch), F. Eddie (Wellington), John Leggo (Picton), F. L. Palmer (Auckland), F. H. Pearce (Dunedin), and N. A. Mcßae (Dunedin).

ANNUAL BALL. i The benedicts of Mount Soraers and surrounding districts were entertained as the guests of the spinsters and bachelors at their second annual ball, held in the Memorial Hall on Wednesday evening, the function proving a successful and popular event, and besides the numerous guests from surrounding districts, visitors were present from as far afield as Hawke's Bay and Invercargill. The zealous efforts of the committee were richly rewarded. The ballroom, orchestral stage, and supper room were decorated with mauve and lemon streamers and clusters of evergreens, while sprays of spring blossoms adorned the supper tables. Dancing was enjoyed to musio supplied by Mrs Mitchell's orchestra (Ashburton), extras being rendered by Mrs W. McClimont. Miss G. Morgan, and Mr Rigley (Ashburton). Messrs C. Monk and N. Beckley acted as joint M.C.'s. The grand march was led by Miss N. Hepburn (joint secretary) and Mr N. Beckley, over 50 couples taking part. A couple of novelty dances added much to the gaiety of the proceedings, a lucky seat waltz being won by Miss L. Wood and Mr P. Fane (Hokitika), and a Monte Carlo waltz by Miss Ada Smith (Staveley) and Mr 0. Robinson. A sumptuous supper was served. VICTORIA LEAGUE. At a meeting of the Canterbury branch of the Victoria League, held at the League's office, Cathedral Chambers, there were present Mrs Deans (president), Mesdaines J. F. Studholme, E. G. Hogg, W. S. Bean, R. H. Hennah, A. Boyle, J. M. Tripp, J. H. Hall, Misses Cocks, Skogiund, McOwen, R. Tabart (hon. secretary), and Mr F. A. Macbean (hon. treasurer). Apologies were received from Lady Rhodes, Mesdames Vernon and Hugh Acland. The subjects chosen for the essays competition held in conjunction with the Navy League, and open to pupils of primary and secondary schools, were approved. The quarterly "At Home" was fixed to take place in ,the Jellicoe Hall on September 20th, when Mr F. MilneT < Rector of Waitaki High School, will give an address. The programme will also include music and afternoon tea. A number of new members were enrolled.
