DUNEOIN, July 8* On Saturday evening Johnny Leckie, Sst 1311b, feather-weight champion of New Zealand, defeated Archie Hughes, Bst 131b, feather-weight champion of New South Wales, in a 15-round contest for a purse of £2OO, that went the full distance. Leckio attacked from tho outset anu was aggressive throughout, winning by n conuoft* able margin of points and delighting a hig crowd with his open, forceful display. Hughes opened weakly, and was knocked down iu the third round, but proved himself one of the toughest defensive boxers tho New Zealand champion has vet encountered. Ho took a great deal of punishment without showing any sign of distress, and finished strongly, thus maintaining his Australian reputation as a strong aud lasting fighter. His ducking and smothering were features of the contest, and Leekic found him very difficult to hit, but ho showed littlo real initiative and on several occasions was warned for holding.
