TBTARU. MAGISTRATES COURT. At the Timaru Magistrate's Court on Saturday, before Messrs D. McLennan, and T. W. Satterthwaite, J.P.'s, Jack Wilson, aged 18 years, was charged with the theft, at Fairlie, on May 11th, of a knapsack valued at ss, the property of John Hurst. He was further charged that on the same day he stole an overcoat, coathanger, leather belt, and a towel, of a total value of 30s, the property of James Glennie. Accused, ■who pleaded guilty to both charges, was remanded to appear on Wednesday next. A Legacy. The Timaru Presbyterian Children's Home has been advised by the executors of the will of the late James Austin that a legacy of £3OO has been bequeathed to the home. Ploughing Match. At the annual meeting of the Timaru Ploughing Match Committee, Mr A. Fraser presided over a good attendance. The election of officers resulted as follows:—President, Mr C. It was decided that the Ground Committee meet and revise the classes and report at the next meeting. Mr Divan reported that the North Canterbury people were desirous that the matches should start\at Timaru this year and work north as the North Canterbury match was to be a Eoyal match and they wished it to take place later in the season. He had not made any definite promise at that time but he thought that the matter should be discussed and a remit sent to the conference at Eakaia this week. It was decided to send a remit to the conference, agreeing to hold the Timaru match as near as possible to the date allocated by the conference. A further remit to the conference was also moved to the effect that no hand or foot work be allowed during matches.

Messrs W. Divan, A. Gibson, A. Eraser, and C. McPhedran were appointed delegates to the conference. The Weather. , • The densest fog experienced in' Timaru for somo years enveloped the town and surrounding countryside in the early hours of Saturday morning, and did not lift"till 10 o'clock. Golfers playing in the South Canterbury Ladies' Championship at Highfield were at a considerable disadvantage in the early stages of play owing to the extremely low visibility, and it was not possible to see the ball for more than a few yards. After the fog had lifted the day was bright and fine and very warm. Yesterday the weather was fine, but occasionally overcast. Infant's Sudden Death. The seven-months-old child of Mr and Mm Bridger, of Thomas street, Timaru, died suddenly yesterday morning. An inquest will be held this morning. Returned Soldiers' Reunion. ' The annual general meeting of the South Canterbury Returned Soldiers' Association was held in the Bay Hall on Saturday night, the president, Mr A. N. Oakley, occupying the chair, and there was an attendance of over 200 members* The annual report stated the receipts from the Poppy Day collections amounted to £lB7 6s, which was considerably better than last year. The financial membership at March. 31st was 173, which was not as good as it should be. The election of officers resulted as follows:—President, Mr A. N. Oakey; vice-presidents: Messrs L. M. Inglis and A. M. Nicholson; treasurer, Mr S. R. Goodman; committee: Messrs W. D. Wallace, J. Shelker, J. Mason, G. Leslie, R. J. Runciman, V. Drake, and P. Davie. An enjoyable smoke social was then held, proceedings being of an entirely informal nature. A programme of musical and other items was greatly appreciated. Eugby Football. At Fraser Park No. 1 ground, Zingari (6) defeated Star (nil), and on the No. 2 ground Celtic (12) heat Old Boys (8), the result of the latter match being. regarded as a surprise. There was an attendant of about two thousand. Star kicked off, playing against the sun. D. Fairbrother, Zingari'6 first five-eighths, took a groat mark in midfield, but io great advantage resulted. Cook and Osmers broke I away, and what looked liko a. dangerous rush by Star waa epoiled by Mcintosh knocking on. Star again attacked, but a free-Jrick relieved the position lor Zingari. Another rush by the Star forwards looked dangerous, but Zingari forced down. Zingari then gradually took the offensive, transferring. plaj to Star's twenty-five. Mcintosh took a good mark for Star, and his kick resulted in play being transferred to Zingari'e twenty-five. Shewan, Star'e hooker, ran over, but was called back for an infringement. A free-kick to Star was taken by Shewan, but his attempt at goal failed. In a passing rush the ball travelled from Stewart to Cook. The movement looked promising for Star, but a dropped pass in Zingari's twenty-five spoiled the chance. A froe-kiok to Star for an obstruction on Zingari's • part wae taken by Mcintosh, who shot the ball half-way u» the field. ZingaTi rallied and took play to Star'e twenty-five, but offside play spoiled a likely chance. After a scrum opposite Star's goal the position looked dangerous, but an infringement again epoiled Zingari's chance of scoring. Zingari again attacked and Dore got across in- the corner. D. Fairbrother's kick failed. Zingari 3, Star 0. E. Fairbrother got well away for Zingari, but a likely chance wa3 spoilod by hia pass failing. A free-kick to Zingari resulted in D. Fairbrother securing a goal. Zingari 6, Star 0. On resuming after half-time, a, passing rush'by Cook and Osmers, for Star, almost succeeded in scoring, but a force-down m the corner saved Zingari. A free-kick to Star, which was taken by Mcintosh from near the halfway mark, juat missed the goal. Zingari rallied and from a line-out in Star a corner a good mark by Howard relieved the position. Zingari continued the offensive, but offside play spoiled .their chances. Mcintosh took a free-kick for Star, transferring play to midfield. Two Zingari players wero warned by the referee within ft few minutes. Two minutes later Zingari players were again warned. Star were awarded a freekick, as Zingari handled the ball in a scrum. At this stage Howard (Star) retired injured, and wa« replaced by L. Stewart. Star attacked vigorously, and their books broke away. Stewart made a great rush Tor Star and nearly scored, but an infringement saved the situation for Zingari. Judge took a good mark for Zingari, but no material advantage resulted, and Star made a good rush, Mcintosh passing to Johnston, but a. force-down relieved Zingari. A period of ■up-and-down play followed, and then a passing rush by Zingari carried play to Star's twenty-five and Star pressed to the attack, but a force-down saved the situation for Zingari, and. the game ended: Zingari 6, Star 0. TEMUKA. PERSONAL. Misses Beatrice and Rita Eagle left on Friday for Christehurch. Mr James Guild (Cashmere Hills), who has been staying with his mother, Mrs J. Guild (Trevana, Milford Ohapi), returned home on Friday. Mrs Jas. Smith left for Dunedin on Saturday morning. Mr W. J. Scott was a passenger on the express on Saturday for Gore, Mrs B. Millar (Brighton, Dunedin), who has been visiting Temuka, returned home on Saturday. , At the hockey match in the Domain on Thursday, between Southern v. Temuka, the referee, Mr Furn Smith, moved a vote of condolence with the relatives of the late Norman Lack—a promising player—and Mrs Philp. Both teams stood in silence for one minute as a mark of respect. Mr G. Eidley, Agricultural Instructor to the Education Board, who, with his wife and family, has been staying for some weeks in Geraldine, has left for Timaru. Library Bazaar. A meeting of the executive of the Library Bazaar was held on Friday, when it was decided to add six classes to the baking competitions. It was agreed to invite the Mayor and Councillors, and the members of the Geraldine County Council, W.C.T.U., and Plunket Society to the official opening, which will be made by Mr T. D. Burnett, M.P., on the 24th inst. • A Necessary Footpath. , Ou Friday the Geraldine County Council's teams were at work forming the footpath to the approach to the Temuka bridge. Presentation.

A presentation in which the whole of the residents of Milford were greatly interested was made on Friday evening in the Milford Hall to Mr John Brown and members of his family. Mr George Parke, who presided, referred to the long residence of the Brown family in Milford and the interest Mr Brown and. the late Mrs Brown had always taken in everything that made for the welfaro of tho district. The chairman's remarks were endorsed by Messrs Alex. Bain, Frank Parke, and A. D. Crossman.

The chairman expressed regret that Mr J. Brown was unable to be present, and asked Miss Brown to give her father a gold-mounted walking stick as a small token of the esteem in which he is held. To Miss M. Brown the chairman (handed a set of fish knives and forks, and a handbag, to Miss I. Brown a silver tea-set, and to Mr J. Brown a clock. During the evening musical items were given by Mr Galo.

WAIMATE.

POULTRY SOCIETY. 0 The Committee of the Waimate Winter Show and Poultry Society met on Friday (Mr C. Creba) presiding. The secretary was instructed to send letters of thanks to the Waimate A. and P. Association, and Messrs C. Coventry and 0. Craighead, for gifts of cups. It was decided to ask Mr J. Wilson to act as auctioneer. Messrs J. Hutt, G. Law, A. Segar, and W. G. Paul, with the secretary and president, were appointed a committee to arrange a programme for the smoke concert. General News. As a result of an altercation at a dance at Morven on Thursday night, T. Bums, a young Waimate man, is now in the Waimate Public Hospital suffering from a severe injury to the eye as the result of a blow. A fight started with Burns and a young Maori, which later developed into a rough and tumble in which Burns received the injury. At the first official shoot of the Willowbridge Miniature Kifle Club there was a large attendance. The Duncan Button was won by S. Eichmond witli a score of 80. FAIRLIE.

The annual meeting of the Fairlie Domain Board was held on Thursday, Mr J. Bray (chairman) presiding over a fair attendance. The balance-sheet showed a credit balance of £lllss 7d, which was considered satisfactory. The following were elected members of • the Board for the ensuing year:—Messrs J. Bray (chairman), J. Caskey, A. J. Grant, H. Welsh, G. J. Talbot, H. Carlton, W. Close, and W. Ormandy. It was decided that the Board meet on the ground to discuss improvements to the Domain. Mr Bray mentioned that the sum of £lO had been promised to help in making the roof of the pergola house suitable as a band stand. Mr Bray and Mr H. Carlton were appointed to inspect the house with a view to alterations and improvements.
