INCREASE IN OPIUM.
CHARGE AGAINST BRITAIN. (UNITED FBESS ASSOCIATION—Bt ELECTEIC TBLEOKAPH— CMTBIGHT.) (Received April 15th ; 5.5 p.m.) GENEVA, April 14. The League's opium assessor, Mr L. Lyall, called attention to the increasing consumption in the Malay Federated and Unfederated States in 1925 and 1926.- He accused the Governments of deliberately increasing the quantity of legal opium in order to decrease the quantity smuggled. He added: "This action is not in accord with the British Government's undertaking." Sir Malcolm Delivinge, Under-Secre-tary for State, denied the charge and said that the Government of Malaya was doing its utmost to reduce the opium consumption. He complained of the absence of figures relating to the production and disposal of crude morphine at Formosa. Mr Sato, the Japanese representative, promised to supply the statistics. —Australian Press Association, United Service.
