COUNTY COUNCILS.
i ♦ EYRE. The monthly meeting of the Eyre County Council was attended by Crs. R. 0. Dixon (in the chair), 0. E. Baynon, J. Cowens, H. E. Evans, J. W. Frizzoll, and Jas Wright. Notice was received from the Progress League that the comprehensive health bylaws for the North Canterbury couhtieß as finally revised, would be submitted to a subcommittee before presenting them to the County Council. It was resolved to make a donation of £5 to the funds of the Kaiapoi Technical School. After discussion it was decided' to make no reply to a series of questions relating to the Control of main roads asked by the Auckland Farmers' Union. ' It was decided to inform the Public Works Department that data required by the Transport Board was not available. Information was received that the land for the proposed deviation from the Middle Island road to the Girder Bridge had at last been proclaimed a road, and. the formation would be begun if the Council agreed to pay all cost above £975 out of an estimated expenditure of £I6OO. The Council decided to reply that more information should be given as to the width of formation, metalling, and size of screoned shingle to be used. It was decided to lease to Messrs Farrier and Walker an additional area of the reserve near the Girder Bridge, as other tenants did not seem to make use of the ground. Dixon's road deviation formation and shingling having settled, it was decided to fence off the old road and divert all traffic on to the new road. The tenders of Messrs White and Ward were accepted for the clearing' of Burgess creek, Parnham's drain, and Jackson's road drain. The engineer reported that the water running through the bolsters at.Greig's road drain need cause no anxiety, that the main highways, though in fair condition, were slowly going back in condition< and would still further deteriorate unless graded with some heavier tool than the present light scraper in use. Reference was made to roads that required grading, and mention was made that roads in adjoining counties were improving through the use of a grader more than were the roads in the Eyre county.
