BOROUGH COUNCILS.

SUMNER. A meeting of the Borough Council was held last evening, there being present: The Mayor (Mr W. H. Hicholson), Crs, T. Newburgh, P. 0. Cooper, H W. Harris, 0. I. Denham, C. J. Wilson, V. E. Hamilton, W. Henley, and B. J. Ager. The By-lays Committee recommended that: "The Council authorise the Mayor to act in conjunction with the traffic inspector in fixing extra parking places for motor-cars on special occasions." The recommendation-was adopted.

The Works Committee recommended that the engineer should, repair the worst parts of Heberden avenue and put in such drains as were necessary and report later as to progress It was also recommended that notification be given to householders in Redcliffs who had not connected with the sewer, to the effect that the sanitation service would be discontinued on March 31st next, and those failing to connect with the new system would be dealt with under the Public Health Act. It had been decided that Cr. Henley be asked to make a comprehensive report regarding the condition ol the fire brigade house, and the cost of repairs to it, and further to report on the cost of erecting a new house on the property. , Cri. Cooper and Ager had submitted a report on their investigations concerning petrol pumps. It had been resolved that the Council be recommended to renew the present licenses for another twelve months, subject to the payment of a fee of £2 per pump, and each licensee to pay his proper proportion of the indemnity premium required to cover the Council up to the £IOOO guarantee in the State Fire Office. The ohairman had reported on the interview between the Works Committee and the Sports Association regarding the proposed dressing shed at St. Leonard's square, and had said that the Sports Association was satisfied with the explanations given, and would make an offer later. The report was adopted. The special committee set up to report on the charges for letting the Town Hall, supper room, etc., recommended that the Council refer to the finance Committee the matter of reviewing the charges for the hire of the Town Hall, etc , and that in future the Town Hall department be administered by the Finance Committee. It also recommended that the Town Clerk be instructed not to book any series of dates in the Town Hall, supper or committee roomß, without first referring the application to the Town Hall Committee, The report was received. A letter was received from the Minister for Marine stating that the question of the control of that portion of land between the Shag Rock tramway viaduct and the road under the cliffs was being further enquired I into. \ The letter was received.

The Heathcote County Council wrote stating that it intended to patch the road between the Heathcote bridge and McCormick'a Bay and to bank the corners.

The Mayor stated that tar-sealing was required, with tho removal of several of the bad lumps which had formed on the corners. Permission was granted a Olifton resident to build a garage on the road level, subject to approval by the Council. Cr. T. Newburgh reported that the Lighting Committee had conferred with the Shopkeepers' Association concerning a Bchemo to improve tho lighting in the shop area. He said that nine shopkeepers had agreed to pay for extra lighting at the rate of 30s per point per annum, the capital charges to be borne by the Lighting Committee He moved that the report be adopted, and this was agrerd to.

NEW BRIGHTON. The New Brighton Borough Council met last night. Present: The Mayor (Mr AW. Owles), and Crs. E. A. M. Leaver, F. D. Muirson, T. Robins, G. W.. Bishop, A. E. Lawry, J. 0. Scott, and R. Stokes. A letter from the Heathcote County Council intimated that n conference of Page's road delegatos would be held in the City Council Chambers on the 15th instant, and it was decided that the Mayor, Town Clerk, and Councillor Muirson attend to watch proceedings on the Council's behalf. The Empire Industries Association intimated that, at a meeting of, the General Committee of AVomen interested in the promotion of an Empire Shopping Week in Christchurch, it was resolved that the Mayors of all towns and boroughs be asked to take steps to make the movement a success, tt was decided that the Mayor and Town Clerk look into the matter.
