SPORTING.

TURF GOSSIP. Nominations for the Hororata, Auckland, Tuapeka, and Southland Meetings close on Friday. Acceptances for the Otauiau Annual Meeting close on Friday. The seven-year-old gelding, Kangiawhio, has again been taken in hand by R. Longley at Riccarton to be prepared for winter racing. Countersign has been suffering from muscle soreness as a result of her rerent racing on hard tracks, and it has now been decided to give her a spell for the winter months.

J. MoCombe will take Amorist and Court Jester north to-night to fulfil engagements at the Wellington Meeting. Both will probably remain for the Eangitikci Meeting on March 21st and 22nd.

Beau Cavalier, who has been having a short respite from the training track, has again joined the regular workers at Ellerslie, looking all the tetter lor the spell. S. Toonian will now be busy preparing.the crack steeplechaser for the approaching jumping season, and can be depended on to turn him out in good fettle. Tho one time well-known rider and trainer, A. J. E'Hingham. who produced tho renowned steeplechaser. Moifaa, some years back, is now a hotel proprietor in tho New Plymouth area and still retains an active interest in racehorses. At a recent nontotalisator meeting in tho district, a horse owned and trained by him, Waitanohau, by Heather Mixture from Vermil, won three races on the programme, including the principal event and the Ladies' Bracelet Handicap.

"When Red Fuchsia first made his appearance over hurdles he created n very favourable impression, and lie has gone on improving as a jumper, winning both hurdle races at the Xanier Park Meeting last week. Red Fuchsia takes after most of All Bert's stock in that he is a fine jumper, and Tits dam, Xedra. was a winner of the 'Wellington Steeplechase, so that he has nil the credentials for a Grand National prospect. He looks sure to win a good race during the jumping season, and no doubt will do just as well when it nomes to tackling the steeplechase fences.

The non-acceptance of Reremoana in the Thompson Handicppi would . come as a shock to ante-nost speculators. As he is still in the North Island Challenge Stakes there is aoparentlv nothing wrong with the geldin". Probably MV 0. F. Moore has decided to race him in the classic event, as he has shown a preference for such events with' Reremoana this season.

In running unplaced in the Flying Handicap, at Napier following upon winning at Wanganui, Shirley repeated her record of twelve months ago.'Will she go on and -finish the chanter by winning at Trentham in the Railway Handicap and at Riccarton in the Great Easter P Recent additions to the active brigade at Ellerslie are Kendal and Good Boy, who arc working under the direction of their owner, 1 Mr A. B. Ormrod. The pair arc in nice healthy condition and should come along quickly. Kendal is looking particularly bright and well and should be a payable proposition when the jumping season rolls round.

Goshawk's win in the Napier Cup last Friday entails a 3lb penalty for the Thompson Handicap, which brings his weight in the.big mile race up to 7.11'. When he won the Summer Handicap, brie -mile, on the concluding day of the Wellington Summer Meeting in January he carried 7.2, so -with 91b more now he will not have matters all his own way. Joy King, whom he beat half a length in January, now mets him vn 71b better terms.

Tresham, who gave Goshawk 131U in the Napier Chip, and ran second to him, is called upon to give only lib now in the Thompson Handicap. It is a considerable pull, and Tresham, moreover, is better at a "mile than at ten furlongs. The Napier performance' on the part of Tresham. was encouraging for his Thompson Handicap admirers.

Writing, on February 29th the Melbourne scribe, "Musket," remarked: "To be subjected to trenchant criticism was the lot of Maurice McCarten, the New Zealand jockey who has settled in Sydney, at the Moorefleld races recently, the general opinion being that he had not shown to advantage on Beekwith and Magdaff, who had been beaten into minor places. Since then, however, he has rehabilitated himself in no uncertain manner, doublo wins having been registered by Mm at Kosehill, Menangle, and Warwick Farm at successive meetings. McCarten is getting the best riding from the G. Price stable, but whether ' he will continue to do so after S. Davidson's period of suspension elapses is a moot point. McCarton is not worrying on that point, as Limerick, the greatest horse he has lidden; is due in Sydney next week."

By running .second in the Flying Handicap at Napier The Hawk gave his owner, J. M. Cameron, a similar experience to the concluding day at the Wellington Summer Meeting, when Goshawk won and The Hawk ran second to Money Order. Only two horses have won the Newmarket Handicap twice. Gothic scored a year ago and again this year, while Aspen was successful in 1390 and IS9I. Fortunatus was second in 1392 and won in 1893, while Playaway was third in 1904, and won in 1*90.3. North Head filled second place in two successive years. Chrystal was third last year and again this year.

TRENTHAM NOTES. [THE PRESS Special Service.] WELLINGTON, March Ji. T. Metcah will riUe L>ngut v..10w m the lUompsun Handicap. L. J. .hliis will ride uvn Jose, Silvei Coot, hair Exchange, and Amourette at the Wellington Meeting this week. Bookings at Trenthatn include:—W. Kavncr (.i hoibcs.l, r. Til ley {*), H. Batten (J), P. \. Mason C-M, u Moroncy U), J- Coyie C 6), \\. Hawthorne (1), F. Ehrhorn (I), anu J. Fryer (2;. W. Hayner v ill leave Wanganui tu: Trent ham to-morrow, bringing with hioi Episode. Damaiis, and Lysander. All three have been doing good work.

Though Civility's name appears m the list of those left in the Challenge Stakes, she is not going to Trenthain. W. H. Dwyer will bring Kiosk to Trentham to-morrow. The son of Tea Tray is in great shape, and he promises to run well in the Thompson Handicap if he starts in that event instead of the Challenge Stakes. The following are the weights to be carried in the North Island Challenge Stakes:—Kiosk 9-10, Keremoana 9-6, Laughing Prince 9-6, Lysander 9-0, Crown Area 9-0, Shirlev 8-12, Civility 8-12, Sulalie 8-10, Gascony 8-6, Philippic 8-0, Prince Humphrey 7-8, Raasay 7-3, Concentrate 6-12, Swoopalong 6-9.

Stagliuntcr and Wild Pigeon are booked for Auckland at Easter. Staghunter will run in the Champagne Stakes and prior to going north may run in a two-year-old handicap at the Masterton Meeting. AVild Pigeon will contest the Great Northern Oaks anil St. Leger, though probably much will depend upon how she shapes in the New Zealand St. Leger this week. .1. Barry will ride her in the classic event on Thursday. Addlepate, who won the Stewards' Hack Handicap at Napier Park on Saturday, scored in the same event twelve months ago. The way in which horses purchased by the Dunedin owner, Mr J. M. Samsou, immediately start returning some of their purchase money has been a striking feature of the New Zealand turf during the past season or two. Tuki, Vawnrd, and Wayward are notable examples, and the latest addition to his string, Tintoretto, secured ;• double at Napier Park last week. Mr Samson has earned in the south the name of ''Lucky Samson," but it is quite evident that there is more than an element of judgment connected with his various and frequent ventures in horseflesh. Mr W. H. Gaisford's team will makethe shift from Greenmeadows to Awapuni on Wednesday, when Commendation also joins un for a further term of active service. Mr Gaisford leaves on a holiday trip to Sydney at the end of the month, and will witness the Easter racing at Randwick. R. Reed,, who rode Gascony when he won the North Tsland Challenge Stakes last year, will have the same mount on Thursday. The only horse that succeeded in winning the. race as a two and a three-year-old was Desert Gold. Achilles won in successive years at. five and six-years-old, and Gloaming won it at six seven, and oight-years-old. It will be remembered that he went to the post when he "n - as a three-year-old, hut was caught in the barrier, and thrown, he race being won by Warplane. It will thu3 be seen that to win the North Island Challenge Stakes twice is an exceptional performance, and this year's field is one of the strongest for several years. In this respect the club deserves a smile from fortune. The St. Leger, also, for some time has been a very lean race for the club, and this year sees the prospect of much better competition. \ The weather was dull and threatening to-day for training work, which was not very interesting, being mainly confined to pace work. The plough gallop was iu use. ' Joy Bird-ran a mile in 1.45 3-5. the first half in 51 2-5. Joy Bird looks well.

Quantum, who lias improved as a result of his racing at Blenheim, galloped four furlongs in 52, casing up. Oratrix did pacing work, and Hyrianna did a couple of rounds. Sir George Clifford's team. Wild Work, Swoopalong, Prickles, Sudden Storm, and Quarterdeck, were not asked to gallop. Swoopalong has plenty of size, and it is not intended to do a great deal with her as a two-year-old.

Rotowhero and Tcheka sprinted five furlongs in 1.3, going well. Concentrate and Humoresque sprinted down the straight. Concentrate, wjio has paid up in the North Island Challenge Stakes, looks well.

Rapier and Lancer were out doing easy exercise. Rapier caught the eye of the track watchers with his hard, bright condition.

TROTTING NOTES.

Nominations for the Wanganui T.C.'s Annual Meeting close to-day. The Wyndham T.C.'s Annual Meeting will be held to-morrow. Excellent acceptances were received vesterdav for the first day of the New Brighton Trotting Club's Autumn Meeting to be held on Thursday there being no fewer than 136 acceptors for the eight events to be decided. The three back-markers in the Burwood Handicap, Logan- Park, Trimmer, and Young Blake, all declined their engagements, but there still remains a field of 19 to contest the event.

For her win in the Timaru Oup Colcne Pointer was penalised 24 yards for the Burwood Handicap at New Brighton. Off her new mark 4.34 she seemed to have a rare chance judging bv her Timaru form.

When Arctotis fell on Friday last his driver, C. R. Hadficld, sustained a broken shoulder besides other injuries.

Key Logan, Great Actress, and Kotuku Jack are early favourites for the Burwood Handicap at New Brighton on Thursday.

AN EASY WIN,

AUSTRALIANS OUTCLASS AUCKLAND. GRIMMETT'S DEADLY BOWLING. ira£S3 ASSOCIATIOK lELEGBAM..I AUCKLAND, March 12. The match between the Australian cricket team and the Auckland representative side was concluded at Eden Park to-day, the visitors winning by an innings and forty runs. Australia had made 431 in the first innings, and Auckland had replied with 171. Following on last Saturday, Auckland had lost no wickets for 20 runs. Continuing to-day, Auckland were dismissed for 220.

Langridge followed up his first innings success by compiling a very solid 78. As in the first innings, lie was not troubled by Grimmett, and faced the slow bowler with the greatest confidence, but eventually fell a victim to the wily trundler. Postles played a good innings for 49, but ran himself out in the most risky manner. Grimmett in Form. Grimmett, who did not meet with much success in the first innings, bowled exceptionally well to-day, and secured seven wickets for 91 runs. He bowled 43 overs in the two innings, including 13 maidens. McNamee, who bowled splendidly on Saturday, failed to reproduce his good form. Although he bowled very well, he failod to get the nip off the wicket which was too evident on Saturday. The conditions were again ideal, and there was an attendance of about 2000, including the Lady Alice Fergusson, Sir Robert Stevenson Home, Sir Francis H. D. Bell, and Sir James Coates. The gate takings were £l3l 14s 6d, £341 9s b'd, and £63 8s for*the three days respectively, making a grand total of £538 I2s.

Bowley Boaten. Grimmett completed his unfinished over when play was resumed this morning, Morton bowling at the other end. With the addition of only six runs to Saturday's score Bowley was clean bowled by Grimmett. The bowler sent down a slower delivery and the batsman jumped out to drive the ball. 26—1—16. Postles and Cooper both commenced well, and with the total at 42 McNameo replaced Morton. Fifty appeared after 25 minutes' play this morning. The batsmen were using t'teir feet well facing Grimmet 1 but with his total at 18 Cooper was well beaten by the slow bowler. 55—2—18.

Good bowling kept the runs down and the scoring was quiet. Postles was meeting the attack confidently, running into the twenties with nicely placed shots. Buns gradually came until, at 73, Blaekie took over from McNamec. As in the first innings, Langridge was playing solidly, while Postles approached the forties by accurate batting. Grimmett was relieved by Moi'on when 90 went up, the slow bowler having captured only two wickets at a cost of 37 runs. Eight runs later Blaekie gave way to McNamce.

100 Up. A couple of boundaries to Langridge carried him into the twenties, and sent 100 up after 90 minutes' play, the total time taken being 113 minutes. Just before luncheon Grimmett was brought back in an endeavour to break the partnership. The slow bowler enticed Postles to go right out, although the ball was slow in coming to him. Oldfield had the bails off quickly, but the decision went in favour of the batsman, who appeared to bo out. At the adjournment the board read 115 for two wickets (Postles 48, Langridge 26).

Postles Run Out. McNamee and Grimrnett bowled on resuming. In attempting a third run for byes Postles was run out in the latter's first over. 119—3—49. A. P. Weir again failed to score, going lbw to Grimrnett in tho same over. 119 —4—o.

Langridgc gavo a difficult chance to McNamee off the slow bowler, the fieldsman making a dive for the ball, and just failing to hold it above the ground. Grimrnett was again unlucky when Anthony jumped right out to him, but Oldfield missed the stumping chance. The bowler, however, clean bowled Anthony next ball. 125 — 5—3.

Since the adjournment three wickets had fallen for an additional 14 runs. A period of quiet play followed the advent of Snedden, which was relieved by a good four to Langridge at the expense of Grimrnett. At 134 McNamee gave way to Morton. Langridge drove Grimrnett spendidly to the boundary and two singles in the same over saw 40 against his name. After scoring six Snedden hit one from Morton into McNamee's hands at point. 146—6—6. Player failed to score, being caught and bowled by Grimrnett. 147—7—0

Grimrnett's Fine Bowling. Grimrnett had now taken five wickets for 56. One hundred and fifty went up after 183 minutes, I/angridge at tho same time reaching his half century. He was warmly applauded for his fine effort. Hendy, who had joined Langridge, soon reached doubles before he fell a simple victim to Grimrnett. 177 B—l6.

McNamee immediately replaced Morton. Langridge was batting freely, good cover drives, cuts, and well placed leg shots taking him into the seventies. G. L. Weir commenced with a four off Grimrnett, who at 200 was spelled in favour of Blackie.

Tho second century was hoisted in 3 hours 40 minutes. Kippax was now given a turn with the ball in place of McNamee. Weir got the new bowler twice to the boundary and Langridge once. At the tea adjournment the score •was 214 for eight wickets (Langridge 75, G. L. Weir 18). Grimrnett and Blackie resumed the attack. The latter clean bowled Weir in his second over. 220—9—21.

Langridge Caught. Langridge was immediately caught at short mid-on off Grimmett. The innings occupied 4 hours 11 minutes. Scores: — AUSTRALIA. W. H. Ponsford, c Bowley, b Anthony .. .. .. 45 W. M.
