LYTTELTON NEWS.

Personal. The Rev. E. H, Shore, late vicar of St. Cuthbert's, Governor's Bay, and his two daughters, left last evening for Auckland, from which port they will sail on Saturday by the Tamaroo for England.

Diamond Harbour. It is the intention'of the Borough Council to carry out improvements to the beach at Diamond Harbour during the coming winter. The work will include the erection, on the east side of tho bay, of dressing-sheds for men.

Daylight Saving. As a result of tho operation of the Summertime Act there was a drop in the receipts by the Borough Council for electrio light last month of £SO, as compared with the same month the previous year. This is notwithstanding that there have been many new connexions made during the year. Thus the consumers have saved £SO, but the Council, which pays tlys Public Works Department on the quarterly peak load, loses to that extent.

The Port Busy. As was expected, with the influx of shipping, the port of Lyttelton was very busy yesterday, and there was a shortage of labour. Tho Union Company's chartered 6teamer Sussex was unable to secure any labour, and the Canadian Prospector was able to secure only one gang where four gangs were required. The position should be about the same to-day, as several more coastal vessels are arriving. As many of the steamers are loading there is no prospect of a shortage of trucks, but more labour could be absorbed to-day if available.

Magistrate's Court. At the Magistrate's Court yesterday, bebefore Mr H. A. Young, S.M., Agnes Margaret Dorothy Lestor, for whom Mr W. F. Tracy appeared, was charged with having on or about May 14th last, stolen an attache case, valued at £l, the property of Eileen Amelia Austad, or alternatively, with having received same from some person unknown, knowing it to have been stolen. A plea of not guilty was entered on both charges. Evidence was given that the attache case was left at a shop in Oxford street, and it was found later to be missing. Subsequently tho case was found in defendant's possession. Defendant gave evidence that she purchased the case for 4s at a jumble sale in Christchurch. The charge wa3 dismissed.
