SOUTH ISLAND CYCLING CHAMPIONSHIP^ A meeting of the committee of the Southbridge Athletio Club was held on Monday evening for the transaction of business relating to tha South Island Championship road race, which has been allotted to the club to conduct this year.
The North Canterbury, Centre of the N.Z. Athletio and Cycling Union vrote thanking the club for its grant of £2 2s towards the Timaru to Christchurch race. A suggestion. for the allocation of prize money, prepared by the president and secretary of the centre, Messrs W. J. Walter and P. C. Lucas, was presented to tn» committee. The total of cash prizes was £64. The first prize was £25, the second £lO, ana' the third £5, the remaining places being allotted correspondingly less amounts. The object of the allocation was to distribute the prize ' money among .as many riders as possible, provision being made that one rider could not receive the first place prize as well as the prize for fastest time. With' the elimination of this stipulation, which was not .considered desirable, the draft allocation was adopted With regard to the date selected for the race, September 17th, wbi-sh is a week later than the Timaru to Christchurch race, the chairman said that ' the majority of cyclists considered this was too close to the big race. In view of the opinions of' intending competitors, it- was decided to change the date from September 17th to August 27th, which is three' weeks earlier than the original date.
It was agreed that the Track Committee 'should make an inspection of the racing track at the Recreation Ground, and present their recommendations to the next meeting as to the best. means of improving it for the annual sports meeting. Following anon a suggestion made at the previous meeting, it was agreed that a series of socials should -be conducted between the dates of the race and sports meeting. The appointment of judges for the road was deferred until the. next committee meeting, on August 15th.
