PUBLIC SPEAKING COMPETITION.

ACCOUNTANT STUDENTS. At a meeting of the Christchurch Accountant Students' Society, held on Monday evening in the lecture room of the Public Library, the annual public speaking competition took place. There was a good attendance of members, and the chair was occupied by Mr 0. 0. Holland, president. Mr E. W. White, solicitor, acted as judge. The speakers were allowed twelve minutes each, and the subject chosen by the committee was "The British Empire: Its Possibilities.' ' At the conclusion of the speeches Mr White criticised the efforts of the competitors, and placed the best four as follows:—Miss H. von Sierokowski, 1; Mr E. J. Blosson, 2; Messrs C. E. Courtney and T. M. Cullen (equal), 3. Miss Sierokowski was therefore declared the winner of the Holland Cup, which was then presented to her by the president, and which she will hold for the current year. A vote of thanks to the judge was moved by Mr G. H. Christie, seconded by Mr J. M. Preston, and carried by acclamation. Another vote of thanks was carried, thanking Mr Pickett, the convener of the Public Speaking Committee, and tho participants in the competition for their efforts.
