CITY STREETS.

TO THE EDITOR OT THE PRESS. Sir,—l read with interest your report on the comprehensive scheme submitted by the engineer to the ' City Council at its meeting last evening. While in full accord with any scheme which tends to improve the present condition of the streets I consider a further inspection by the City Engineer would reveal many streets in a worse state of disrepair than those enumerated in your report. As a resident of Sherborne street, I wish to protest most emphatically against the utter lack of consideration displayed by the Council thereto. On a wet day the street is a veritable quagmire, while the intrepid motorist who is venturesome enoijgh'tp: choice Sherborne;'street as a means >f thoroughfare is surely reminded of the Mararoa on a stormy night. The grass on the leirle of the road, which has been allowed t<> grow unchecked, is sufficient to feed a .small herd of cattle. What has made the street worse is that motor-cars and motor-buses from English Park make their wav down Sherborne street so as to avoid the trams on Colombo street. An insoection by the City Engineer would be greatly aporeciated b v the residents in this vicinitv. but before he does so, I would advise him to see that his car is fitted with balloon tyres to alleviate to some extent the nhysical discomforts. such journey would entail. —Yours, etc., RATEPAYER.
