The City Council last night decided against a proposal to utilise portion of the old Chester street Fire Brigade Station for the purpose of a women's rest room. The Water Supply and Works Committee reported on the proposal as follows: In connexion with the proposal thatthe old Chester street ' Fire Station should be ro-constructe<l and made suitable for use as a women's rest room, it has been ascertained that "The Ohristchurch City Reserves Act, 1877," places the reserve on which the building is , situated in trust _ for the purposes of a fire brigade station, provided that the Corporation shall not be entitled to erect any other buildings or alterations to the free use by the. public of the said sections than are necessary, for the purposes of the said fire brigade station. It is" understood that by including a clause in the Local Legislation Bill during the .coming session of Parliament, it would be possible to convert the building into a rest room, part of which cotild be let to the Plunket Society, and the Committee recommends that the City Solicitor be in-, struoted to prepare a. draft clause authorising the Council to re-construcE, alter, or renovate the existing building for this purpose. Regarding the proposal a letter was received from Mr R. B. Owen, River Improvement Fund, asking the Council to refer to the Christchurcli Reserves Act, 1877, which expressly provides for all • the area of land on the south bank of the Avon,- between Colombo street and Manchester ' street bridges, being held as a reserve for all time, and stating that the Act expressly safeguards the - interests of the City .against such a proposal as is now being made, and that, these buildings, in accordance with the provisions of the Act, should have been cleared away when the Fire Brigade vacated the buildings'in August, 1913. He therefore asked on behalf of the citizens .of Christchurch for the complete demolition of the said buildings, and the restoration, of the site to a City reserve, without undue delay.

The clause in the Committee's- report was rejected.

THE NAVY LEAGUE. ; TO ASSIST UNEMPLOYED. In response to the invitation ■of "-Mrs Algar Williams and members of the Women's Auxiliary Committee of the Navy League . (Canterbury branch), about one hundred ladies attended a very enjoyable "at homo" held last night in the Nary League Hall, Worcester street. Although the gathering was chiefly of a. social. nature, some vers uaefuj and practically sympathetic decisions Were arrived at during tfie evening. Mrs Algar Williams reminded the guests that, at the annual meeting held a month ago, she had suggested that the women members of cue League, of whom there were over foul hundred, should undertake some definite charitable work, such as providing money and clothes for tho needy dependents of naval men in Britain During the last few weeks, however, Mrs Williams said, the need of help for tho poor and unemployed in Christchurch had become so pressing that she would like members to devote the iKXt few months to assisting in the alleviation of the sad conditions of the women and children of Christchurch, whose bread-winners were unable to find work. At Mrs Williams's invitation, Mrs Roberts gave a touching account of her personal experiences of the poverty existine in Christohiirch a.t nresent. "It is welT that we slipuld know our own City," said Mrs Roberts, in briefly mentioning the many, excellent charitable institutions and guilds in Christchurch nil doing valuable work. There wer6 yesterday in the City, 188 married me.-j amongst the unemployed and 15l single men. > The married men had 550 dependents. Mrs Roberts described the system adopted by Mrs Herbert and her helpers at the depot where work. was demanded in payment for the help given. Mrs Roberts made 1 a touching - appeal for assistance for those, who, through physical or mental disabilities, wero unable to work. 'She described a home that she had visited in-connexion with the work of the .relief depot. In almost every case, she found the houses clean and ueat, though in many cases there was no fuel and little or no food. She paid glowing tribute to the work of Mrs Herbert and her helpers, many-of whom were members of the Citizens' Welfare Guild, which for years had none, unobtrusively, much good work for the poor. After Mrs Roberts's _ address the meeting decided, unanimously, thaii members would sew in their own homes for the relief depot, and as the need was urgent, members agreed to bring to ths Navy League Hall on Monday at 3 o.m. as many warm garments as they could make ir. the week. On Monday, July 19th, the membera will meet again and review the position. After the business was disposed of, a charming musical programme contributed by Mrs J. E.
