At Burnside, to-day, heavy sheep and best ewes -were Is dearer than last week's, and butchers' lambs and those suitable for freezing Bold at from par to Is advance. Opening rates for prime light fat cattle wero up some shillings, but fat cattle prices declined towards the finish and sold at equal to last Fat cattle^—A yarding of 325, of all qualities, compared with 281 last week. The proportion of primo heavy cows and heifers was large, and some nice consignments of finished bullocks were forward. Tho demand opened at par to 10s advance for light prime sorts, with heavies unchanged, but owing to tho size of the yarding prices declined on the opening rates at the close. Extra prime heavy bullocks were £l6 10s, prime heavy 1 £l3 5s to £l4 ss, prime light £lO 15s to £l2 JOs; best heifers, £7 5s to £8 10s; best cows, |£7 10s to £8 15s. Kxtra prime ox beef sold at equal to . 30s, light ox beef to _2Bs, heifer beef to 255, and cows and light heifers ISs to 22s 6d. Pat Sheep—A penning o-f 2081-compared with 3309 last week. Tho proportion of ewes was large, though many were of indifferent quality. The number' of prime wethers was moderate, and medium-weight sheep were of average supply. The opening demand was fair. . Heavy sorts and best ewes improved Is per head, but rates for the balance of tho. entry wore unchanged. The sale finished with bost sheep Belling fairly well. Prices: Prime heavy wethers 28s to 31s 6d, medium-weight prime 26s to 27s 3d, light 24s to 25s 6d; best ewes 20s 3d to 245, medium 15s to 17s, light lis to 13s 6d. On a per lb basis, prime heavy wether mutton sold at 4ild, prime light wether at 5Jd, extra heavy ewe Sid, and prime light ewe 4d. Lambs—A small entry of medium quality, Somo prime heavies were included, but'thero was a fairly big sprinkling of unfinished sorts. Butchers' lambs and those suitable for freezing met with good enquiry at from par to Is advance. Other sorts were unchanged. Prices: Heavy lambs 27s 9d to 295, prime medium 23s to 24s 6d, unfinished 15s 6d to 18s. Tho usual buyers were operating, and tho demand and prices wero much on ; a par with last week's. The steers roalised from £6 5s to £8 9s. Pi~ s — x penning of 11 fats and 76 stores. Porkers were dearer by about 5s a head, and baconers were o shade firmer. Small sorts mostly comprised .the store entry, and m general store pigs were a few shillings cheaper. CHRISTCHURCH STARRBOWKETT SOCIETY. At a meeting of the Christchurch Starr- J Bowkett Building Society tho sum of £IOOO | was put up for ballot in each group. in No. 1 Group ball No. 196 was drawn out but as only three shares were °? a ° cia i „ was decided to hold a. further ballot. Ball No. 174 was then drawn, the cluster being hold by two members. The sum of £I3OO was therefore allotted as free loans. In No. 2 Group Ball No. 196 was drawn. This cluster comprised only five shares held by one subscriber, who became entitled to a free loan of £SOO. BUTTER AND CHEESE PRICES. The National Mortgage and Agency Co. of N.Z., Ltd., has received tho following cabled advice from London— "Butter: The market is steady. This week's allotment has been cleared, principally at 150« to Ij>2s, and a small quantity at 152s to 1545. Cheese-. The market is also steady. White and co - oured cheese 76s to 775.
