The Council lias not been unanimous in its opinion that the street requires widening, but whilst the matter has been under discussion certain building permits were held over, and the Borough Engineer. Mr T. 0. Fox, was instructed to report oji the matter. The report which the engineer placed before a special meeting of the Council last night stated as follows: —"Further to my report suggesting that uie Council give consideration to the possibility of widening this street on the eastern side, I attach hereto a plan showing the position of the railway line relative to the existing boundary of the street. There is also shown one scheme by which the roadway could be extended to almost the standard width of 4Cft between kerbs without either moving the railway line or acquiring any private property. This can be done .bv erecting a wall to within the minimum distance of the line allowed by the Railway Department regulation from a poiut two chains north of Sarah street for a total length of 528 ft. For the whole of this distance the carriageway would be 46ft wide, except for a few feet north and south of Sarah street. At the former point it would be seven inches less than the standard, and at the latter point fourteen inches less. The estimated cost of this wall, road formation, reconstruction of kerb and channel and footwav on the new alignment is £3090." Cr. T. W* Satterthwaitc thought that the engineer's explanation might solve the problem, but he wanted to know if the report had to go before the Minister for Railways. The engineer said that the report had not been submitted to the Railway Department, but he thought that there would be no objection to the proposed wall, as it would not be an obstruction. C'r. G. Benstead was of the opinion that a small committee should be appointed to deal with the matter. Cr, P. C. Yinneli said that he did not agree with the proposal. He thought that the Council should do something that would go down to its credit, lie hoped that the Council would go carefully into the matter. The Mayor (Mr G. J. Wallace) thought it would be unwise to take valuable land on one side of the street (the ■west side) when the Council owned the land on the other side (that near the railway line). He. was of the opinion that a small committee would do the work bett'e#/ Failing; that, he would be in'iavour of approaching the Harbour Board asking it to sell sufficient land to - the Council to allow the street to be extende.d to 66 feet. He thought that the land Could be obtained at a reasonable price.

It was decided that a committee be appointed to approach the Harbour Board and the • Railway Department, with a view to obtaining- sufficient land to widen the street; 1 Courthouse Returns.
