WAIMATE.

WINTER SHOW. The Waimate Winter Show last vear proved a great success, both financially and from an exhibition point of view, and the indications point to this rear's fixture being even more popular. The schedule has been revised, and several South Island championships will be decided here in the poultry section next i June, Tradespeople are supporting the j show enthusiastically and this year no i less than £7O worth of special prizes I are being given. j Ram Pair. i A total of D6O entries has been received for the ram fair to be held at the Show Grounds to-day under the auspice 3 of the Waimate Agricultural and Pastoral Association. Last year the entries totalled 403. The following well-known breeders will have stock on offer: Messrs A. W. Barnett, J. Baikie, Gluyas Bros., E. B. Harrison, W. H. Hodgen, J. H. Mitehol), J. R. Patrick, 11. liuddcnklau, and E. Stokes. Hon. Territorials' Association. That the business affairs of the Waimate Honorary Territorials' Association be wound up, and the Association disbanded, was the substance of a motion which was carried at a special meeting of the Association, convened for that purpose, at the instanco of Major Norton Francis. Mr A. Garland presided. Major Francis wrote stating that the money standing to tho credit of the Association, some £l6 Ds, should be placed at the use of the local company of territorials. This course was decided upon at the meeting, and it was resolved to place tho money in the Post Office Savings Bank in the joint names of Mr A. Garland and Captain G.H.O. Barclay, officer commanding the Waimate Territorials. Captain Barclay, on behalf of the territorials, thanked the Association for its generosity and the members for the interest they had taken in the work of the territorials. Motor Collision. A collision between a motor-car and motor-cycle, in High street on Saturday afternoon, fortunately was not attended with very serious consequences. The cycle, which waß ridden by W. Rollinson, was damaged, but the rider escaped with a few minor cuts and bruises. The car sustained a fow scratches and dents. Presentation. At the annual meeting of the "Waimate Scottish Society, Mr A. R. Cooper, on behalf of tho members, presented Mr W. G. Paul, president of tho Society, with a handsome case of pipes, at the same time voicing the appreciation of all of tho recipients' past services to the Society. Other speakers were Messrs J. A. Neely and J. Walker, who both referred to tho great help Mr Paul had given in bringing the Society to its present state. The recipient, in a few well-chosen words, acknowledged the gifts. Easter Sports. Local athletes are now in full training for the annual sports meeting to be held in Victoria Park by the Waimate United Friendly Societies on Easter Saturday. Both cyclists and runners are making good use of the tracks at the Park, and the cycling track, which is in very good order, is being particularly well used by local wheelmen. Waimate Golf Club. The Waimate Golf Club intends officially to open its season on Thursday on the Adendale Links, when mixed foursomes will be played. The links are said to bo in the best of order, and somo good cards are expected to be handed in. This year the Club expects to have a most successful season and the membership has so increased as to place the funds of the Club in a most satisfactory position. Plunket Society. The Waimate Plunket Society has been assiduously canvassing the district of late for funds, and although a liberal response was made by the public, further funds are still needed. With a view to increasing tho amount already received, the members are enthusiastically setting out to arrange a ball, from tho proceeds of which it is expected to augment the funds considerably. A strong committee of ladies has arrangements well under way, and the large hall is expected to be packed to capacity on the night arranged for the dance. A Popular Teacher. A farewell social was tendered to Mr and Mrs A. A, Harrison, in the Wailiaorunga School, whore there was a large and representative gathering of residents of the district. Mr Harrison, who has been for somo two years master at the school, has accepted a position with the Otago Education Board. Mr H. M. "Whatman, who presided, presented Mr Harrison with a beautiful travelling rug and umbrella, on behalf of the residents, and Master N. Whatman, a senior pupil of the school, handed to the departing teacher a goldmounted fountain pen, on behalf of the scholars. Mr Harrison suitably acknowledged the gifts. During the evening a dance was held, and at intervals musical items were contributed by Misses T. Young, and H. Dalziel, and Messrs Harrison, Whatman, and Price. Messrs Ramsay and Smellie were M.C.'s.
